They look just like they just got off the chain gang.

Tough characters back then.

Back in those days you grew up fast, and you grew up hard.

You can see the early developmental stage of the Bama Bangs in 1934 with Riley Smith.

My dad has a story that kinda involves him.

Steadman Shealy was getting married in Heflin, AL sometime before Bryant retired/passed away and flew into Anniston to attend it. My dad was working for a local airline at that airport at the time and went out onto the tarmac to meet him. Dad brought a friend along in toe.

My dad walked up to Bryant, introduced himself, and asked him what brought him to Anniston. Bryant said that Steadman Shealy was getting married and he was going to be in attendance. My dad's friend then asked Bryant who Steadman Shealy was. Bryant eyed him suspiciously, kinda gave him the once over, before asking: "Where you from, son?"

"Ohio." My dad's friend replied.

"Oh." Bryant replied. And then he walked away.

I don't know why but I always thought that was a funny story the way Bryant reacted to his answer.

it's amazing how many of those guys threw for less than 100 yards in their bowl or championship game. Quite a few.

Namath's pic looks like he's the most unathletic kid to ever put on the helmet lol.

It's a shame the pic doesn't show his hands...they hang down to about his knees!. He was one of the 2 or 3 best athletes to ever come out of UA.

Barnes played some baseball in the majors for a few years for the Wash Senators mostly, hit .305 his second year, only played 4 years, must have gotten hurt. Played in the minors for over a decade after that.

I've always thought that Steve Sloan looks so cool in the game pictures I've seen of him. He looks like the proto-typical, hard-nosed, badass, old school QB that you'd see in a movie or something.

He did. Just as a back-up. He was the starting QB of the undefeated ‘66 squad.
