It's a really weird thing in the CFB zeitgeist. 2019 LSU is considered the greatest of all time. They beat us by 5 and Tua was on one leg the whole time. Healthy, the 2019 Bama was better than 2019 LSU, and the 2020 Bama was better than 2019 Bama. 2020 Bama played a tougher schedule than 2019 LSU and outperformed them in most categories. Exactly. Tua also missed nearly a month of practice and it showed given how uncharacteristically sluggish he was to start the game.
Yet despite that rough start, once he settled in, he balled out and even out performed Burrow in the game.
That 2019 LSU team struggled with the barn and almost allowed an 8-5 Texas team to come back and win. I bet 2021 and 2022 UGA would have their way with that LSU team as well.

It’s scary to think how good the 2020 team could’ve been had Waddle not gotten injured. We were already incredibly good without him. But with him that team might have scored 70 points a game with Sark calling plays.

The 2019 season was when we lost both our experienced inside linebackers to injury during fall practice. Because of that, our inside linebackers that season were freshmen -- Shane Lee and Christian Harris. It might not have made a difference in the outcome, but I will always wonder if our defense was healthy would we have won the game.

I dare say that we would have a couple more national championships if not for injuries. The 2021 team comes to mind having to play Georgia twice with all of the injury problems. That was BS.

There are many ranking systems that have either have 2020 Bama as the best of all time or at least better than 2019 LSU. SP+, FPI, SRS, and Brad Power’s Vegas CFB Power Ratings all have 2020 Bama better that 2019 LSU.
SP+ has Bama 2020 as the best of all time. ESPN’s FPI has only been around for 20 years but it has Bama 2020 as the top team during that period. SRS (Simple Rating System) goes way back and has 2020 Bama at #9 all time; 2020 Bama is the only post 1973 team in the top 10 (1945 Army is #1).
Here’s a link to Bill Connelly’s argument (it’s a good read) using SP+ that 2020 Bama is the greatest of all time just after they whipped OSU in the 2021 CFPCG (he still currently has them rated the best after the 2023 season):

I mean do you remember what we did early in the season to UGA? It was an eviceration.
They didn’t even belong on the same field as Bama and that was a very talented UGA squad.
Bottom line the defense wasn’t peak Saban but I’ll take my chances with 2020 Bama against anyone, especially if you’re talking pre Waddle injury.

That 2020 offense was the best offense Bama ever put on the field and can make a winning argument the best in cfb history.
Najee Harris doesn’t get the credit he deserves but imo he’s one of if not the best all around RB’s to ever play at Bama.

Eddie Jackson going down hurt but we still jumped out on Clemson. Losing Scarbrough when he had been on a tear was the fatal blow.

Shaun Dion Hamilton also got hurt against UF in Atlanta I believe. Dude was having a great year at LB.
Still, you'd think with a defense that stacked, Clemson's OLine would have been called for one hold during the game, right?

They had to make it fair to Clemson. Especially after Alabama jumped out to a 14-0 lead.
That Clemson team lost to Pitt and NC State missed a field goal at the end of regulation, otherwise Clemson wouldn't have made the playoffs.
That win was a complete fluke and job by the refs, for Clemson to win.

I hate LSU as much as the next guy, but cmon, let’s give credit where credit is due. That team was really fricking good and incredibly talented. I would have loved to see a healthy** 2019 Tide squad take them on because that’s got to be one of the greatest collectives of offensive talent to be on the same field at the same time in the history of college football. Just the skill positions.. 3 first round picks at QB, 6 first round picks at WR, 2 first round picks at RB. That’s pretty unbelievable.
The game they almost dropped versus Texas was either week 1 or week 2; we’ve had elite teams drop games or come close to it too. Auburn had an elite DL that year and played LSU tough in really shitty conditions.
Both Alabama’s and LSU’s 2019 squads would have throttled 2021 and 2022 UGA. Even Kirby’s defenses don’t fare well against elite offensive talent (Exhibit A - 2021 SECCG; Exhibit B - 2022 Playoff game vs. Ohio State).
I think our 2015 team would have beaten 2019 LSU. But that was a helluva season the Tigers had in 2019. And Ed frickin Orgeron was at the helm lmao.
