With overall pick No. 401, the Braves selected Colby Jones out of Northwest Florida State College.

This one is probably the toughest one since Jones was most likely going to be our 2nd baseman next year if he made it to campus. Going to be hard to turn that down.

Perfect Game profile
quote:

Andre Modugno is a 2024 3B/RHP/OF with a 6-5 210 lb. frame from Upper Saddle River, NJ who attends IMG Academy. Outstanding athletic build, broad shouldered with plenty of present strength and room for more, stands out physically. Right handed hitter, has a long and strong swing with an uphill finish, huge raw bat speed, turns his hips hard, will have some swing and miss but has top of the scale raw power as well, multiple 104 EV's in games. 6.44 runner in the sixty, exceptional runner for his size. Primary third baseman on defense, has good flexibility and gets his glove down well, athletic charge, big arm strength. Also worked out in the outfield and showed his 100 mph arm there as well, no reason he couldn't be a high level defensive outfielder as well. Took a turn on the mound, works from the stretch with good direction to the plate, high 3/4's arm slot. Works downhill with a fastball that was consistently in the mid-90's and topped out at 97 mph. Slider showed some late downer bite. Huge ceiling if the hit tool plays. Excellent student, verbal commitment to Duke. Named to the Perfect Game All-American Classic Team.

Norton can swing the bat. Good pickup. Also Norton primarily has played third base, but has played some at second as well and might be an option there.

I did not recall that happening, but that's a pretty huge pickup. Major talent.

Someone gave Jones BAD advice. I dont even think his draft order has any guaranteed money. He will probably not see the majors and will be broke.

How do you draft someone and then tell them they get no signing bonus? I mean, not at least 15K? Something? Strange.

I don't think you understand how rounds 11-20 go in the MLB Draft. Teams can give up to a $150K signing bonus to players from these rounds without dipping into the signing bonus pool that they have allocated for picks 1-10. It's actually more common to see really low sigining bonus amounts for the later rounds of the first 10 so that teams have extra money to convince a Round 11-20 guy to sign that is leaning towards college.
