AFC Coordinator: Alabama dodged massive transfer portal exodus with Jalen Milroe leaving

Interesting.

After Nick Saban’s retirement, Jalen Milroe chose to return to Alabama under new head coach Kalen DeBoer in 2024. He could have done so again in 2025, but ultimately chose to declare for the NFL Draft.
When Milroe made that move, though, an AFC coordinator told NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero Alabama avoided a massive exodus. The coordinator heard multiple key players thought about entering the transfer portal if he came back.
Interesting.

Agents say all sort of shite to coaches and reporters to jockey for their talent. GMs and coaches may do the same for draft board shaping.

multiple key players
To be fair, and if true multiple means more than one. So this could easily be someone like Ty and a starting WR, which is plausible.

That's odd because the braintrusts on here made it seem the entire team was under his control and he manipulated two coaching staffs, forcing them to start him.
Occam's Razor...
It's always the simplest solution.
The guy just has talent that gets people to hope he will turn the corner but he fails you every time you believe in him because he doesn't have the mental strength or the technique to be successful consistently.

You got downvoted because people don't like you and I'm going to get downvoted for agreeing with you but I don't give a s**t, but I don't see how anyone can deny the truthfulness of this sentence. And IMO he's going to do the same to some NFL team and staff because although I wish him no ill will (but again I'm glad he's gone), I simply don't think he's ever going to "get it" even if the talent and potential were literally pouring out his ears.

This is ridiculous. If he had decided to return for another year, it would be through transfer portal. He was never coming back to Alabama for this fall no matter what.

I don't doubt this to be true. This is also NFL speak for "We want to take a chance on him, but we don't want to get fired for taking him too early when there is a good chance he will blow up in our face so let us see if we help his draft stock slide a little more so he might fall to us at a defensible pick".
Or Tommy Rees is getting his get back, like "write this down, off the record."

Different quote from an article on NFL.com:
quote:
"He's a 22 mph-on-the-ground guy," another AFC coordinator said. "He's got a fastball that's not very accurate. He doesn't know when to take it off the ball. We heard out of Alabama all the skill [players] would've transferred if he came back. He wants to be known as a pocket quarterback and your best skill is you're frickin' fast."

Have yall watched videos of Ryan Williams running routes and being open 2-3 times a route and the ball being way late?
Not saying Simpson is Joe Burrow, but surely he’s not this bad.

That added context conveys the message a whole lot better.

Yeah Milroe is stupid fast.
The guy also has zero wiggle, shake or footwork.
When people call him a RB I smh because they don't know what RBs need to be a RB.
If Milroe could move like a RB half his problems where he loses all his confidence ina split second would disappear because he could at least shake someone and always get yards.

Yes, BUT, there was no doubt that Milroe had the "locker room" in 2023, and at the start of the 2024 season. After the Vandy loss, he started losing the locker room.
I think it's important to point out that not one single player on our depth chart is transferring. Not one.

OK, ON3 took this thing WAY out of context. The part about Milroe was one tiny part ... one part ... in an NFL dot com piece on NFL scouts, coordinators and executives assessing the top 18 quarterbacks in this year's draft.
This makes it sound like somebody just started talking about Jalen out of the blue. The people in the story were talking about ALL of them.
Like Jaxon Dart for instance: "Dart is the toughest motherf----- there is," an AFC GM said. "He makes all the throws. He's got everything you want. But then he just does some dumb things. I think if you put him in the right system and use his athletic traits and his toughness and let him throw the ball 20 to 25 times until he learns the game more, learns to lead more and all that, you could have something. But this kid could also be Will Levis 2.0."
"I could teach my dog to f---ing run those concepts," an AFC executive said. "[Kiffin] makes it very simple."
Or Quinn Ewers: "There's just no juice in his body," an NFC assistant coach said. "He's little. Arm strength lacks. Athleticism lacks. I don't really know the upside of that kid. When you put their film on and (Arch) Manning comes in the game, the ball is just jumping off his hand in comparison."
"The Texas kid, I wasn't a fan of," an AFC coordinator said. "He can hit short and intermediate, but he's like an all-arm thrower. He never uses his lower body and he's not accurate down the field."
Or Shadeur Sanders: One longtime NFL assistant coach said his time with Sanders was "the worst formal interview I've ever been in in my life. He's so entitled. He takes unnecessary sacks. He never plays on time. He has horrible body language. He blames teammates. ... But the biggest thing is, he's not that good."
"His college tape looked like Caleb Williams without the elite physical arm talent," an NFC coordinator said. "I'm sorry: You can't play that game at this level. So, you've got to be banking on him making a jump from a decision-making, in-the-pocket, on-time, under-pressure [perspective], where you don't have evidence of that on tape."

Plus they left out another person talking about Milroe:
Said an AFC executive who saw Milroe play live: "This is the fastest guy on the g**damn field. He was outrunning angles. He's just so f---ing erratic. He's a smart enough kid, but not a fast processor. Has to see it open. Doesn't have anticipation. He's the typical big, rifle-armed f---er who throws everything f---ing hard and fast and will throw a good pass and then the next five, you don't know where the f--- they're going to end up."
Honestly the only QB any of these folks liked was Ward, said he's head and shoulders above everyone else.

Yeah but those message board insiders said he was the team's choice and literally everyone would leave, including the band, if he was benched.

its believable. why would a WR waste a year running free and not getting the ball? Ty for sure also would have gone at the least. An Ryan Williams could have named his price in the portal

All of the things said about Milroe and the others are true. But if there's one thing that I can say about commentary coming out of NFL teams this time of year, even off the record, is be very careful what you believe. If they like a guy, chances are they are going to bash him to get others to hopefully buy it and drive their stock down or draft position down.
It's all BS and misdirection this time of year from staff and front offices.

Yes, but what have these NFL scouts said that wasn't said here on this forum and others ad nauseum for 2 frickin years?
The ONLY difference is that the Milroe lovers finally started seeing the light after the Vandy game.

Understand fully. I just think it’s disingenuous on ON3’s part … not the OP, he responded to what they posted … to present this as just about Milroe and the supposed defections if he’d stayed just to get clicks from Alabama fans, when it was just a passing aside in the piece.
I despise clickbait.

His vision as a RB reminds me of Trent Richardson in the NFL when he had a massive hole but chose to run up his OLs backside.
