This illness had been going on for at least 2 weeks. So 2 weeks of filling lungs with infection. Also, if they were treating a viral pnuemonia but it was actually bacterial, it continues to get worse. I could see sepsis happening but a pulmonary embolism could definitely be possible. I don't believe it was sepsis secondary to PNA that killed him. He was reportedly okay the day of his collapse. Sepsis can be deadly no doubt, but to come on that quickly an kill an otherwise healthy man in one day is very suspect. I care for sepsis patients daily and you just don't see that happen. My hypothesis is a pulmonary embolism secondary to PNA from increased coagulation activation.
