A new column from ESPN's Chris Low revealed a few more details about why Nick Saban retired from Alabama...
quote:

"I want to be clear that wasn't the reason, but some of those events certainly contributed," Saban said. "I was really disappointed in the way that the players acted after the game. You gotta win with class. You gotta lose with class. We had our opportunities to win the game and we didn't do it, and then showing your [expletive] and being frustrated and throwing helmets and doing that stuff ... that's not who we are and what we've promoted in our program."

Saban said he heard two questions from players after the season came to a close that also helped lead to his retirement.

"I thought we could have a [expletive] of a team next year, and then maybe 70 or 80 percent of the players you talk to, all they want to know is two things: What assurances do I have that I'm going to play because they're thinking about transferring, and how much are you going to pay me?" he said. "Our program here was always built on how much value can we create for your future and your personal development, academic success in graduating and developing an NFL career on the field.

"So I'm saying to myself, 'Maybe this doesn't work anymore, that the goals and aspirations are just different and that it's all about how much money can I make as a college player?' I'm not saying that's bad. I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying that's never been what we were all about, and it's not why we had success through the years."

NIL sucks and has ruined college sports forever.

He’s not wrong about the NIL/transfer stuff. Worst thing to have ever happened to college athletics.

Surprised to hear him come out and say it about Bama's players, but yeah, money is ruining college football.

As far as the classless remarks...I hate to say it but it is "new" way at every level. I am at the middle school level now and you wouldn't believe how classless these kids are today. It's only going to get worse because there is no home training anymore. Tv and social media are raising these kids. I'm with Nick on this one and I only have two months left myself. God willing!

It was time to go. He's not putting up with that s**T. I don't blame him. He's not built to tolerate the entitlement mentality. College football will never be the same, unless there's some regulation. Until then it's the wild wild west and get what you can get where ever you can get it.

Knew he left awfully abruptly. He didn't want to retire. He couldn't handle the new rules, so he quit while the quittin' was good.

I think I'd feel the same way, especially if I had a gazillion dollars saved for retirement.

I agree totally with the context of that statement.

It is what 'student athlete' is supposed to mean.

How sincere he is wrt to that is beyond my ability to ascertain.

Its not amateur sports anymore and IMO needs its own semi pro league. College should always be about higher education and award scholarships to people who are looking to advance in academia.

Nick was a fraud NIL exposed when he couldn't buy off players with a Charger and a no show job for mama

In January, he claimed his retirement had nothing to do with NIL, which we all knew was BS. NIL and the portal have screwed CFB sideways and he warned everyone this would happen before it become a thing. He was 100% justified to peace out and owes no apologies, just don’t understand why he didn’t say this in the first place.

"The Process" began and ended with the Saban era. Guys like Sark, Kirby and Lane may include bits and pieces to be successful but his CNS's magic recipe for success was changed by modern society - not the coaches. Same can be said for any legacy company or organization. "The times... they be a changin'!"

Kinda mirrors what appeared to be his reason for leaving NFL so fast. Even playing field with players getting paid. Can't dominate. Went back to college so he could amass the best players. The few he had trouble bringing in got a Challenger.

But he's right, paying players removes the "heart" from the game. Money is the reason most play now, not pride. NIL and portal has ruined it.
