South Carolina made history by defeating Iowa, 87-75, on Sunday in the NCAA Women's Tournament championship game in Cleveland.

It was the second national title in the last three seasons for the Gamecocks, and their third overall under Coach Dawn Staley over the last eight years. They also became the first team to finish a season undefeated since Connecticut in 2016, completing a 38-0 campaign while avenging their last loss -- which was to Iowa in last year's NCAA semifinal.

It was a team effort after the Hawkeyes jumped out to a 10-0 lead at the outset and led 27-20 after the first quarter.

Tessa Johnson came off the bench to lead the Gamecocks in scoring with 19 points, but it was Kamilla Cardoso who was the game's dominant force with 15 points, a career-high 17 points and three blocks.

Te-Hina Paopao added 14 points, and Chloe Kitts had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
