Paul Finebaum Takes Unprovoked Shot At Longtime Announcer Gary Danielson
HISTORICAL ARCHIVE, MINIMUM USAGE FEE APPLIES;
Longtime ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum, a big supporter of the SEC, is not happy with what SEC announcer Gary Danielson said about Neyland Stadium this week. Danielson said that Neyland Stadium is “just about the same” as the SEC's other stadiums. Finebaum then went off...
quote:

“There’s kind of an unwritten rule if you’re not so full of hubris and arrogance and think you know everything,” Finebaum said. “It’s not like Gary was stopped at the Atlanta airport and said, “What stadium do you think?” He was being interviewed by a reporter who works in Knoxville for the Knoxville News-Sentinel group and he’s coming to Knoxville. So only Gary could stick his foot in his mouth by not praising the greatest stadium in college football, Neyland Stadium! That’s the part I don’t understand.”

“Next year when he’s doing the Big Ten Saturday afternoon Game of the Week when it’s Minnesota at Purdue, and he’s in a cornfield in West Lafayette, he’s going to have to say, ‘This is like any other Big Ten stadium,'” Finebaum said. “… I may never get over that interview you did with Gary Danielson.”

Sounds like Paul is triggered.

Danielson is the best in the business. His critics are typically those who have never strapped on a helmet or have never played the game.

"Danielson is the best in the business".... I agree. The only reason so many posters here think he's biased is because Bama has been the best team in the SEC for the last 15 years, so of course any announcer doing their games is going to be complementary. Bama's had the best players and won most of the games. The emotional infants on this board can't handle that.

@ atltiger6487 I can't stand GD and it has nothing to do with any disposition he may or may not have toward Bama. He has an annoying voice and is a know it all. Too often he won't let moments in the game go and just move on. Especially when what he thought happened is proven wrong in replay.

Gary Danielson is a bum.

So what Paul is saying is you should adjust your replies in an interview based on who is interviewing you, rather than being honest as Gary did. Paul is a fricking bum.

But Gary wasn’t being Honest. It’s no secret he does not like UT and is an Alabama/Saban mouth piece. He knows good and damn well that Neyland isn’t just like any other SEC stadium. Gary called the Alabama and UT game last year and everyone attended or watched it said that atmosphere was the best they have ever see. Players like Will Anderson, and Baker Mayfield have even said Neyland is the loudest place they have ever played at. So for Gary to say it was like the rest was just dumb.

Paul should really get into politics. He believes in telling the crowd just what they want to hear.

Regardless, Danielson does suck.

@TexasTiger89, Paul was never a player at UT. He did graduate and get his degree from UT, but he never played any sports in college.

Danielson made so many LSU/BAMA games nearly unwatchable with his Gump cheerleading.

Gary’s held Saban’s balls more than Ms. Terry.

Danielson was actually being generous.

I’m sure Neyland was a fine stadium in the 60s. But it’s a crowded heap of concrete and steel now.

Oh look, Finebaum is looking for headlines again.

Finebaum is wrong. I thought the consensus was that Michigan Stadium or Notre Dame Stadium is considered the greatest stadium in all of college football. But, there are a lot of great SEC stadiums so saying UT is the same is a complement. If SEC has great stadiums on average then being the same is pretty good.

Paul’s wrong, too, if he thinks Neyland Stadium is the greatest in all of college football.

Paul criticizing Gary as arrogant when Paul is as arrogant as anyone who covers college sports. At least Gary has actual knowledge about football. Paul’s qualifications as analyst are that he hosts a show that depends on a bunch of stupid callers to exist.
