After Joe Namath went down about halfway through the 1964 season, Sloan stepped up and finished out as the starter, guiding Alabama to its second national championship season under Bear Bryant. Then in 1965, as the team's full-time starting QB, Sloan once again guided Alabama to a national championship with a legendary performance against #3 Nebraska in the 1966 Orange Bowl. He is often forgotten as his time as starting QB was sandwiched between Namath and Stabler. However, he was a solid QB in his own right.

I remembered his name but I think it was from his coaching days. Heard he was a good man. Sympathies to his family and all who knew him.

He was on the senior Bowl roster his senior year but for most of the first half he was on the sideline with a headset on and the crowd started chanting "Get Sloan off the phone!"

He was a great gentleman, RIP Steve.

Are you really a legend if no one has heard of you outside of Tuscaloosa?

Probably the most forgotten QB legend in SEC history. Steve just didn't lose.
That Orange Bowl against Nebraska he had 296 yds passing which back then was like 550 today. RIP Steve.

You would think that a Tennessee sports Hall of Famer would be appreciated by a Tennessean

RIP Steve

Sloan was the OG Freeze.

Great offenses at ole miss but bill parcels didn’t come with him to Oxford.

Not to mention he was also a head coach at Vandy and the AD at Chattanooga. In addition to being a HC at Ole Miss, and Duke, and the AD at Alabama.

Great Christian man. His former players loved him. A friend of mine who played for him at Vandy named his first son Sloan after him. RIP

And was only 30 years old. Won SECCOY over Bear Bryant, Shug Jordan, Bill Battle, & Vince Dooley.

Watched that game w/my Dad on our black & white TV w/rabbit ears antenna - Ray Perkins and Dennis Homan were the Bama WRs and they both had a great night catching Sloan's passes - RTR.

I remember Sloan basically being run out of Tuscaloosa when he was the AD because he actually had the AUDACITY to say that Auburn should be allowed to play their home games wherever they choose.

The bammers then lost their collective mind (yes, mind is singular in this example) because Sloan had agreed with Auburn that they should be allowed to play the Iron Bowl in Auburn. Because of Sloan’s honest admission, they turned their back on one of their own and ran him off.

That is why he ended up back at Vandy as the OC.

One of my Dad’s best friends was teammates with Sloan on those two NC teams and always talked about what a fine, generous man he was.

RIP Coach Sloan.

ETA: I'm curious if the downvoters are upset that I reminded them of how they treated Sloan or are they going to try to lie that what I stated above is not the absolute truth. My guess is that it is the latter.

They ran both Sloan and Curry off because they admitted that Auburn should be able to play their home games wherever they choose. It didn't help Curry that he couldn't beat Auburn.

ETA:

Steve Sloan Resigns

"Sloan, however, was criticized by some Alabama fans for his handling of several issues, including the signing of a contract to play rival Auburn at Auburn for the first time ever this year"

Ok offenses and ok recruiting. That is about it for Sloan. I know of not one Ole Miss fan unhappy to see him leave. He was a good man. Just not a good coach. There are worst things in life.

Wanted to mention that Sloan won an SWC title at Texas Tech between stints at Vandy and Ole Miss.

I remember that they had a "Don't go, Steve" campaign in Lubbock when word got out that he might leave for Ole Miss.
