uneducated guess........water takes a while to warm up while concrete/asphalt heats up fast in the sun during spring time.

I will put my biologist hat on for just a second after sleeping at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

It is nesting season so gators are probably looking for high land this time of year to lay their nests. Unfortunately, they end up on the road where it is nice and high and warm from the asphalt. They also look for a safe spot away from other gators and predators. The population also has increased to the point where many of the safer places for a nest are taken and expand their territory where they may need to cross a highway. Unfortunately cars are no match for a crossing gator and they become a speed bump. They can also be hard to see, and it is too late to avoid running one over.

all males. Its mating season, they are looking for a Ms. Gator. You wont see them once mating season is over

I noticed a few driving to and from Nola two weekends ago.

When we visited in March I swear there was a dead nutria every 10 yards on I10 along Sauvage.
