I did not count the 2003 FWAA as the consensus was BCS champ = National Champ at the time. I did not count the 1974 or 1978 UPI championships as AP was seen as the National Champion at the time.
From 1936-1998 the AP champion was the National Champion. 1999-2013 BCS champion was the National Champion. 2014-2023 CFP champion was the National Champion. If we want to only honor 'consensus national champions' then I can work that, or we can go back to when 3 or even 4 teams were crowned by one organization or the other. I chose AP, BCS, and CFP #1 over the years when the majority considered that the champion.

USC soundly beat Alabama head to head in 1978. In 1974, AP champ Oklahoma was on probation.

Naw. Coaches > media. You can always do separate categories like consensus and then split.
