LSU senior running back John Emery Jr. is returning to the team in 2023 for a fifth season instead of entering the NFL Draft.

Monday was the deadline for players to declare for the NFL Draft, and Emery Jr. did not declare. He has also hinted at his return with a couple of social media posts over the last few weeks.

Emery Jr. played in 11 games this past season with two starts. He finished the year with 375 rushing yards and six touchdowns and caught 13 passes for 129 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

He returns to the LSU running back room that includes Armoni Goodwin, Noah Cain, and Josh Williams. The Tigers also signed four-star high school running backs Trey Holly and Kaleb Jackson this offseason.

Emery Jr., a former five-star running back from St. Rose, La. (Destrehan HS), missed the 2021 season and the first two games of the 2022 season due to an academic suspension.

Def, the right decision to come back, but he’s going to have to solve the ball security issues! Also, needs work on his pass blocking (blitz pickup) duties….

Great! I hope he runs wild this year! If the running backs do well, that means we have a stellar o-line. That, in turn means the passing game is also flourishing.

I’m convinced that a good running game is a good indicator of the whole offense.

Smart move not to declare for the draft. He likely would not have been selected.
