What's the significance of winning 10 games in a season?

Attaining 10-win seasons signifies sustained success, playoff contention, and enhanced recruiting appeal. These have done it the best! Congratulations!

This is through the 2023 season...........

1. Alabama - 44 (#1 nationally)

2. Oklahoma - 43 (#2 nationally)

3. Georgia - 28 (tied w/USC #5 nationally)

4. Texas - 25 (#10 nationally)

5. Tennessee - 21 (#12 nationally)

6. Florida, LSU - 15 (tied #15 nationally)

8. Auburn - 14 (#16 nationally)

9. Arkansas - 13 (#17 nationally)

10. Texas A&M - 12 (#20 nationally)

Not bad considering we took 15 years off and also had an iffy period pre Majors.

I’m not a huge fan of the 10+ win stat because it doesn’t factor SOS.

Boise State has 18 seasons of 10+ wins since 1996, yet you’d be hard-pressed to find 10 wins against ranked opponents during those 18 seasons.

I know I can remember a lot of 9 win seasons in Auburn history that included a schedule of 4-5 highly ranked opponents while there were some 10-win teams those same seasons who played just one or two such opponents.

I wasn’t aware we had that many. Does this include bowl wins?

Imagine if we had actually had an AD with a brain after Fulmer was let go. Damn them for those dark ages.

A combined four of those happened across 44 seasons of SEC football. The other 21 were from the SWC glory days.

Number of Final AP Top 10 opponents faced since 2010:

46- Auburn

39- Tennessee

37- Alabama, Florida, LSU

35- Georgia
34- Arkansas
33- Miss St

29- Ole Miss
28- S Carolina, Vanderbilt
27- Texas, Texas A&M

25- Missouri
24- Kentucky
23- Oklahoma

Again. The variance is SOS that exists in this sport is too severe to put much stock in # of 10-win seasons. When the Sooners start playing a schedule with a pulse, there’s no way those 10+ seasons will keep piling up.

You’ve had 8 with only 3 in the sec. You couldn’t do squat anywhere you’ve been.

Another SOS stat:

Number of seasons in the past 14 years (since 2010) in which each team only faced one, lone (or fewer) Final AP Top 10 opponent:

6- Oklahoma
5- Kentucky, S Carolina, Texas A&M
4- Vanderbilt
3- Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss
2- Arkansas, LSU, Missouri, Texas
1- Florida, Miss St, Tennessee
0- Auburn

In 43% of each and every recent football season, the Oklahoma Sooners have been able to face a favorable schedule that included only a single Top 10 opponent…. The 2010 team actually played zero. Meanwhile Auburn never once faced a schedule like that during the same period of time.

Again, when taking these things into account, I’m not too impressed with some of these 10 win seasons.

Mizzou has as many 10-win seasons in 12 SEC seasons as Arkansas does in 32 SEC seasons.

I think something like more than a quarter of OU’s total football wins come against three programs with all-time losing records. Let me double check that statistic.

Edit to show my math and that I am correct:

OU has 944 total wins
80 against Iowa State
77 against Kansas State
80 against Kansas
.2510 of OU’s wins come against these three schools, all of which have all-time losing records

OU is still a true blue blood, of course.

And we actually have Oklahoma football fans on the rant who can't seem to grasp their consistent football greatness over the decades.

They are easily the second most decorated team when their feet hit the SEC.

You cherry picked 2010 and later because the big 12 was very dominant before that. Also OU and Texas have always maintained top SOS. OU has always played Nebraska and Texas yearly who combine for more NCs than the rest of the SEC combined if you don’t count Bama and TN.
