It feels great having a coach that "gets it" regarding recruiting.
Gus didnt emphasize the OL which was maddening considering his own offense needed it.
Harsin emphasized his podcast maybe.

Gus "emphasized" the OL plenty, he just absolutely, positively, failed to beat the waves of negative recruiting associated with our O line recruiting. Our enemies managed to convince 80% of the top OL recruits in every cycle after Greg Robinson busted that our blocking scheme wouldn't project well to the pros. WR and O lineman were at a tremendous disadvantage when they made the jump to the league because of Gustav's scheme. Braden Smith and Calvin Ashley were the last 2 recruiting wins he had up front.

If you are going to attach quotes to emphasized you can go ahead and attach them to plenty as well because I 100% disagree. He would have incredibly lean years but the story was always "next year will be better."

Blidi is a huge pickup not because he is a superstar star player but because he’s proven and fills a need at the 3 tech.
Riakes will also be massive because of the same put will fill the need at the 0 tech.
Then let’s get a couple WRs and I will feel a lot better

He and our coaches always emphasized the position to me brother, they just lost and got their asses kicked. I only mentioned that because alot of our fans act like he didn't want lineman or see the importance. He totally did, but got his arse handed to him nonetheless. Glad we got the kid from Indiana.

Gus’s OL recruiting was certainly hampered more by scheme than effort. Former OL have said it was simplistic, and it certainly became a negative recruiting emphasis. Gus adjusted by focusing on athletes at the position that he gambled on teaching the X’s and O’s. Some hit, some didn’t,
OL is tough as hell in general. Schools that recruit it well still have nightmare OLs. There’s a lot of luck goes into those sort of bodies and skill sets

If he would have gotten 6 or 7 three star dudes that would have showed me he was trying to field a better OL. Instead he went after a limited basket of highly ranked guys and then had to go plan B later on but we still only grabbed linemen in small numbers.

Even the mid-tier three star guys were skipping over Auburn at one point. At the end of his tenure we were begging guys like Jmarion gooch to commit to us while Bama and LSU were signing 5* guys left and right. The word was out on Malzhan's scheme dude. Commit to Auburn and have a tough transition to the NFL. Gus was a dead man walking after that.

I remember some of the negative recruiting and articles he experienced.
If Gus was willing to let his own scheme cripple him then he really is stubborn!

Haskins was so bad that people now have selective memory about mediocre Gus and how he was slowly killing the program. Haskins just did it at warp speed.

Gus' scheme was dead the second they changed the substitution rules. After that, we were treading water at best - short of some late season heroics from Kerryon Johnson.
Auburn loves these "quick fix" coaches. Hopefully, with the changes the portal and NIL are making in the game, that will eventually change to the better.

Harsin didn't fix anything, and all he did quick was get himself and AG run out of town

Potato man was the coach who didn't even try and recruit. Gus was arrogant and refused to adjust when times changed BUT, Haskins ingored recruiting visitors, wouldn't do zoom calls with recruits and parents, blamed covid even though every coach dealt with that, and even spent EVERY Fri night watching his son play football instead of hitting the road. Gus and Harsin don't belong in the same sentence. Oh, and let's not forget running off Bo, and Kobe Hudson along with making the entire team revolt against you by season 2?!?!?! But hey, he worked out with the team lololololl

remember Tank leaving for the NFL and thanking Gus Malzhan but not his current coach of 2 seasons???? Lol Anyway I'll stop and keep it recruiting now. Boy JuJu can spin it, am I right?! Lol
