Jordan's Takeaways: Nike EYBL in Atlanta

quote:

Cameron Boozer

The 6-foot-10 forward was his old dominant self, using his size and strength to overpower and out-finesse the competition to the tune of 23 points, 13 rebounds and six assists. Boozer looks like he may even be a step quicker, effortlessly getting to his spots on Friday night.

quote:

AJ Dybantsa

Dybantsa’s skillset is unparalleled and coupled with his motor creates a force so dominant it’s scary to think of the ceiling. Dybantsa, who is ranked No. 1 overall in the Rivals150, gets to his spots because of his quickness and footwork but is adept at recognizing which dominant attribute to unleash given the situation. He finished with 23 points, four rebounds and three assists in a loss to Team Takeover.

quote:

Meleek Thomas

The 6-foot-4 shooting guard was a man-child all night against the loaded NightRydas, using his special blend of athleticism and three-level scoring to post 25 points, six rebounds and three assists in a double overtime win. Thomas’ motor never shut off and that translated on the defensive end as well.

DARRYN PETERSON FINALIZING DATES FOR NORTH CAROLINA VISIT

There are few prospects in the country as in-demand as five-star guard Darryn Peterson, who spent the weekend in Alabama showing his full, wide-ranging skill set and electric athleticism running with the Game Elite grassroots organization. He has no shortage of versatility to his game and, fittingly, no shortage of college opportunities. One such opportunity is an offer from North Carolina, to which Peterson says he’s currently finalizing a date to visit.

“I’m excited to see what it’s like down there,” Peterson said on Saturday. “I watched some of their games this year and I’ve been waiting to take this official visit for a while. Watching RJ Davis and how ball dominant he was and how he got to hoop this year, I feel like if I go there we could have similar games.”

Peterson says he’s already heard from new Kentucky head coach Mark Pope, who called to re-offer him after getting the Wildcats’ head coaching job last month. The former Kentucky staff has also been in touch with Peterson, who says he hopes to take a visit to Fayetteville down the road but has not discussed a date for such a trip just yet.

Asked which programs are most involved in his process as things stand, the five-star guard rattled off some seriously heavy hitters.

“Kansas, Ohio State, Kentucky, Arkansas and North Carolina,” Peterson said. “There’s probably another one I’m forgetting. My dad knows all of them.”

NATE AMENT EYEING TRIPS TO INDIANA, VIRGINIA

One of the most versatile and well-regarded prospects in the 2025 class, it’s possible that Nate Ament could improve on his already lofty, No. 14 ranking in the Rivals150 based on his rapid development this year. The Team Loaded star continues to balance working on his game and managing a crowded recruitment, however, and the next item of business pertaining to the latter seems like it might be either a visit to Big Ten Country or a return trip to a familiar campus.

“I haven’t set anything in stone yet, but I’m going to be going to Indiana soon,” Ament said on Saturday. “I’m also going to go back to [Virginia]. With Indiana, their head coach used to be a big-time big coach in the NBA and coached big-time NBA guys. They want to keep developing me as a versatile player. They would help improve my game

A Virginia native, Ament has already been on campus at UVA on a handful of occasions and remains incredibly close with the Cavaliers’ staff. And while he certainly isn;t a lock to land in Charlottesville for college, Tony Bennett’s program is a near lock to be involved until the end.

“I have a great relationship with coach Bennett and coach [Jason] Willford,” Ament said. “They talk to me all the time. They’re a big defensive program, so they give me tips and tricks on improving that part of my game. They’re good people over there.”

In addition to setting up visits to Indiana and Virginia, Ament has been in contact with the new coaching staffs at Kentucky, Arkansas and Louisville but has not entertained the idea of visits to any of the three just yet, though he says that may change down the road.

FIVE-STAR KOA PEAT TALKS UPCOMING VISITS

The upcoming month or so will feature visit destinations both new and familiar to five-star forward Koa Peat, the Arizona-based standout with a long list of major offers to his name. A June 6 visit to Houston is already set in stone and will be his first trip to the Cougars’ campus and it’s one he’s looking forward to for a number of reasons.

“I’m executed to see the campus and the facilities and everything,” Peat said on Saturday. “I already know coach K.C. and the head coach, coach [Kevin] Sampson pretty well but I’m excited to get around them and interact with them in person and all that.”

He says he also hopes to take an unofficial visit to Arizona later in the summer before planning more official visits to places such as Duke, [b]Arkansas
and Baylor. Peat says he’s already been on campus at Arizona “three or four times” and feels comfortable in Tucson, but wants to take one more unofficial in addition to an eventual fall official visit before he makes his commitment.

“When I talk to Arizona now, we just mostly talk about how I’m doing,” Peat said. “We don’t really talk about basketball much. We talk about a lot of other things.”

Darryn Peterson, Phenom United - There are a lot of things to note with Peterson - the positional size, physical strength, terrific hands, touch, shot-making ability, vision, pick-and-roll reads, etc… It all boils down to an overlap of size, skill, and feel that just seems to make the game look easy for him. Now, that can be a double-edged sword, as there are times he could be better defensively or more active off the ball, but overall it was a viewing that was impressive as you would expect for a top-five prospect in the class.

Koa Peat, Compton Magic - It was a full two years ago, when he was just a freshman, that Koa Peat first dominated this circuit. He did the same last year as a sophomore. The fact that he continues to do the same, for the third consecutive year, speaks to his maturity and competitive stamina. He's long, broad, and powerful, with good hands, instincts, and touch. He's a constant double-double threat and a mismatch playmaker because of his ability to get to his spots against a set defense as well as out the ball on the floor.

Former Kentucky forward Adou Thiero, a projected first-round NBA draft pick in 2025, is following John Calipari and will transfer to Arkansas, he told ESPN on Monday.

Thiero considered a long list of schools, narrowing it down last month to Pitt, Kentucky, Indiana, North Carolina and the Razorbacks.

"I started with Coach Cal and want to see it through with him," he said. "Very excited to join the family and ready to get to work."

A 6-foot-8 forward from Leetsdale, Pennsylvania, Thiero is ranked No. 27 in ESPN's 2025 NBA draft rankings. He started 19 games this past season for Calipari at Kentucky, averaging 7.2 points and 5.0 rebounds in 21.3 minutes. Some of the sophomore's biggest games came in the Wildcats' toughest games, putting up 16 points and 13 rebounds against Kansas in the Champions Classic; 15 points, five boards and three blocks against Gonzaga; and 14 points and eight rebounds in a win over Auburn.

Thiero took a clear step forward from his freshman season, when he averaged 2.3 points and 1.9 rebounds in 20 games.

His development under Calipari and familiarity with the Hall of Fame head coach gave Arkansas the edge for his commitment.

"He's known for putting guys in the NBA that also stay in the NBA and coach Kenny Payne, who is now with him again, was also there for some of those years," Thiero said. "After already playing for him and developing after two years, I feel that he knows my game and will put me in the right position to succeed and achieve my goals."

Thiero becomes the fifth player to follow Calipari from Lexington to Fayetteville, joining incoming freshmen Boogie Fland, Karter Knox and Billy Richmond, and rising sophomore center Zvonimir Ivisic. The Razorbacks are also bringing in top-five transfer Johnell Davis from Florida Atlantic and all-SEC big man Jonas Aidoo from Tennessee.

Arkansas basketball and John Calipari have landed another big time transfer portal player. Former Kentucky forward Adou Thiero committed to the Razorbacks on Monday afternoon, according to a post on his personal Instagram account. He chose Arkansas over offers from Pittsburgh, North Carolina, Kentucky and Indiana.

Thiero is currently rated as the No. 10 overall transfer available and No. 3 power forward by 247Sports. He originally committed to the Wildcats as part of the 2022 recruiting class, but played sparingly during his freshman season.

The 6-8, 222-pound forward showed much more promise his sophomore season, despite missing eight games due to injury. He started in 19 of 25 games and averaged 7.2 points, 5.o rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.1 blocks. He shot 49.2% from the field, 31.8% from three and 80.0% from the charity stripe.

The Leetsdale (Pa.) native had 16 points and 13 rebounds in an 89-84 loss to No. 1 Kansas on Nov. 11; recorded 15 points, five rebounds and three blocks in an 89-85 loss to Gonzaga on Feb. 10 and tallied 14 points with rebounds in a 70-59 win at No. 13 Auburn on Feb. 17.

"Don't let the numbers fool you, Thiero is a highly impactful transfer," 247Sports national recruiting analyst Travis Branham wrote recently. "He has great physical tools, is a big-time athlete, and competes on both ends of the floor. Thiero is not far from polishing his jumper to push him over the edge and become a NBA Draft pick. The former Wildcat will bring defense, physicality, rebounding and intangibles to his next team."

Thiero is the seventh pledge for the Razorbacks in this cycle, and they currently have six roster spots left to fill for the 2024-25 season.

Arkansas added another transfer commitment from head coach John Calipari's former team, as Kentucky guard Adou Thiero chose the Hogs on Monday.

A 6-foot-8, 222-pound soon-to-be junior from Pennsylvania, Thiero is the second Wildcat alongside big man Zvonimir Ivisic to join the Hogs.

Thiero averaged 7.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists while shooting 49.2% from the field, 31.8% from beyond the arch and 80.0% from the charity stripe in 25 games played for Kentucky last season.

Thiero took a visit to Arkansas on May 1, revealed by a post he made on his Instagram account.

A former three-star prospect according to Rivals, Thiero initially committed to the Wildcats over offers from schools like Xavier, Duquesne, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Maryland.

This time around, Arkansas had to fend off pushes from North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Indiana for Thiero’s commitment.

According to NBA Draft Room, Thiero currently projects as a late first to early second round pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

"Thiero is a powerful wing/combo forward who has awesome physical tools and has been a nice upward trajectory, becoming a more complete player and contributing on both ends of the floor," NBA Draft Room said. "He’s a standout defender, rebounder and energy player who does all the dirty work and plays within his role.

"He’s not yet a very good 3pt shooter but shows some promise and there’s a chance he develops into a solid floor spacer. He is good from the FT line and his shot definitely isn’t broken. Although his game is still unrefined he’s got the type of tools and upside that will be intriguing to NBA teams."

Thiero is the seventh scholarship player added to the Razorbacks’ roster ahead of the 2024-2025 season.

Former Kentucky small forward Adou Thiero committed to Arkansas and will rejoin head coach John Calipari in Fayetteville.

Thiero averaged 7.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in 2023-24. He shot 49.2 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free throw line.

Thiero officially entered the portal March 28 and recently cut his list to five schools, including a potential return to Kentucky. He also considered Arkansas, Indiana and North Carolina, in addition to Pitt, On3’s Joe Tipton confirmed in late April.

Thiero played only seven minutes in the NCAA Tournament against Oakland, a game that Kentucky lost 80-76. He finished with 2 points and 1 assist on the night.

Since Calipari accepted the offer to become Arkansas‘ next head coach, seven Wildcats entered the transfer portal and three entered the draft. Further, four of Kentucky’s highly-touted 2024 signees re-opened their recruitment.

As a member of the Class of 2022, Thiero was a three-star recruit out of Leetsdale (Pa.) Quaker Valley, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 8 overall prospect in the state, the No. 32 combo guard in the class and the No. 265 overall prospect in the class.

As a senior in high school, he averaged 23.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 3.9 steals and 2.3 blocks per game.

Thiero will get to play for his coach once again, just in a different uniform this time around.

Calipari had been at Kentucky since 2009. During that time, he went 410-123 and won a national championship. he also took the Wildcats to the Final Four on four different occasions. However, in recent seasons, Kentucky has struggled more come March.

Following the 2023-24 season, Calipari chose to leave the program for another SEC school, Arkansas. There, he’s replacing Eric Musselman and expectations are again going to be high once again.

There isn't a more well-rounded guard in the 2025 class than five-star Darryn Peterson. The 6-foot-5, 195-pound Peterson does a little bit of everything on the court and does it all well. There’s a reason his recruitment is overflowing with bluebloods and other heavy hitters, after all.

Following one of his Phenom United squad’s games at adidas 3SSB in Birmingham, Peterson spoke to Rivals about where things stand as they relate to his college recruitment and what might be next for his process.

quote:

ON COACHES THAT HAVE REACHED OUT RECENTLY:

“I just recently got a re-offer from coach [Mark] Pope and the Kentucky staff. At Arkansas, I’ve already talked to coach Chin [Coleman] and coach (John Calipari). I’m pretty sure I’m going to go visit there, too.”

ON CALIPARI TAKING THE ARKANSAS JOB:

“I thought he'd be there for life. He was telling me that I was coming there next year and all that, so I didn’t expect him to leave at all.”

ON THE MESSAGE FROM CALIPARI:

“He said he got a new job, but nothing has changed. They still want me. They are still going to have Kentucky-type everything.”

quote:

ON SCHOOLS IN THE MIX TO LAND HIS COMMITMENT:

“Kansas, Ohio State, Kentucky, Arkansas and North Carolina. There’s probably another one I’m forgetting. My dad knows all of them.”

quote:

RIVALS' REACTION
It’s unclear how serious things with Kentucky and Arkansas will get, seeing as both programs are under new leadership but both seem to have a puncher’s chance to climb into the thick of things should they get Peterson on campus during the fall or summer. Kansas and North Carolina seem like the most serious players for the time being.
