Not sure how it has evolved since NIL, but it was also unique in that it was designed to not be an NCAA sport so that the individual student fishermen could get their own sponsors and win tournament money.
But, my info is dated, as I only had mild interest when a buddy of mine was helping start the team at North Alabama.

There are several schools in arkansas adding bass fishing at the high school level. Same goes for esports.

The fact that they defied a bunch of half baked Covid hysteria rules in order to fish is another reason to admire them.

Sort of curious about the recruiting aspect of this. Does the Bass Fishing coach watch hours of film on a person’s casting technique? Do they follow them to the lake and watch them fish? For an official visit, do they take them fishing? So many questions.

AU is purely club ran by the student anglers. No coach. No NIL. They are very active in attracting partnerships/sponsors within the industry to help offset the cost of fishing/traveling along with donations.
I think University of Montevallo and some of the other colleges who do well are doing something in the form of partial scholarships for anglers and have a coach in a more formal team sport way (not sure that is all accurate, but I think I remember reading it somewhere).

One of my good friends son (fishing family as there is) got a full ride to Stephen F Austin about 10 years ago through the Bass Fishing Team. Him and his partner won the NC his senior year. The day after the NC tournament they had just those two launch at a random lake for a fish off, the winner got a spot in the Bassmaster Classic. His partner won and got the spot. My friends kid went on to get a job with Bassmaster as a reporter, he now works for 6th Sence Fishing. His partner fished BM tournaments for a few years and now has regional Fishing TV Show in Texas.

They were very briefly suspended for (the horror) fishing during the Covid scare. The university backed off it pretty quickly when folks heard about it. It's a club sport, gets no money from the university, and the guys did nothing more than go fishing in a boat wrapped with AU Fishing Team graphics (it was their boat, and they paid for the wrap).

I am guessing you have not done too much of any of those.
Do you need to be a triathlete to compete at the highest level? No.
Does it takes years and tons of practice to be competitive in them? Yes.
I urge you to borrow some clubs and go hit the driving range. Since it isn’t a sport you should have no problem. You should have it down in a few minutes. Then go walk 18 holes on any golf course in the south on a pretty, sunny 97 degree July day. Make sure there is no wind that day so it won’t affect any of your shots. Again, it should be easy for you.

You can do any sport at the club level if you’re willing to organize it and pay for it yourself. There are schools with Quidditch teams. At least fishing is a skill that you can use the rest of your life.

South Carolina is the same. I had a buddy on the national championship team from SC like 8 or so years ago. Its very much so a club sport with outside funding

I never said practice doesn't helps you in an area.
BTW, I'm from SE Ga. & played tennis, basketball, baseball, football, & band...so I know about being outside in the heat.
& it's interesting talking about walking 18 holes when so many use golf carts to get around.
