Whats the deal with the white banner behind the sideline signal callers?

Maybe I just haven’t noticed it before, but 2 dudes were holding a big plain white banner up behind the signal callers on the sideline. Is this so they stand out better or to somehow block people reading signals ?

I haven’t noticed us doing it but many teams have been.
