Our guy signals to move, and we get a penalty. The announcer says "that's a good call by the refs." Explain this to me like I'm 5 because it's the first time I've seen it. Also, is this a rule new? Thanks.

Yeah, I’m not sure how the defense making a vocal call could be a penalty unless they were actually mimicking the snap cadence, which I doubt they were since it was actually a call for the DL shift.

They said during the game it was the hand signal given by the d line to move? How is a hand signal affecting the snap count?
I understand somebody clapping to mimick the qb but a hand signal for a shift ? That’s bs.

The penalty is for a clap or a shout of some kind, we don't get flagged for the actual motion or for a hand signal. I've seen them call that onus in the past extremely rarely but for some reason there seems to be a super focus on it this season across the board not just with us

There was a similar penalty against Missouri on the last drive against LSU yesterday.

Officials obviously had a meeting about this.

McElroy said on the broadcast that whatever Sorey yelled out to call for the D Line shift must've been too close to mimicking the snap or some shite. I didn't completely get it either.

I believe the call was "Move" and the officials must have thought it was too close to what Kentucky used to adjust their offensive line. We had shifted our defense several times before that call so I didn't understand it.

The defense is basically imitating the snap count which causes the offense to jump before the snap is made, so that's where the DOG/disconcerting signals comes into play.
And yes it is a relatively new rule, I think it was instituted 2 or 3 years ago IIRC.
High school(NFHS) also instituted the rule 2 years ago.

We do that a lot so what is the difference between that time it was considered a penalty and the other times when it wasn't? A different voice command?

You used to get called if the defense started yelling “hike!” I want to say they called it delay of game.
Now it is called Disconcerting Signals and you can get penalized for clapping on defense if it appears you are attempting to simulate their cadence.

That makes sense, although I'm not sure how that specific play simulated their cadence anymore than the others but wtf do I know.

It’s complicated. It’s real complicated. May be above some of y’all’s football IQ. No offense.
That’s not me talking. That’s all Coach Smart told reporters when they asked him about it in his press conference

It was a specific point of emphasis in off-season referee meetings. We were called for it in previous years, but only if it seemed as though we were deliberately trying to affect the cadence of the offense in some way be it clapping or shouting. With the new emphasis on it, anything close is called. Naturally with the way the game is today, any slight thing the defense comes up with to gain an advantage will eventually be outlawed.
