From a admittedly so-so baseball fan, a real question...

I've had fun watching little bro whine about Schloss, and I have some wonder why people seem to dislike Vitello so very much, even some Tenner fans when they are being candid.

So from a blank sheet of paper, who would the real baseball fans among my fellow Horn brethren pick if you could from the college coaches out there (employed currently or not) to run the Longhorn BB program now that we've properly run Pierce off?

With all apologies to BigBro, who asked a similar question. I hoped BB fan posters might offer their reasoning, rather than just offering names--many of which I'm not even familiar with, and how likely they think their choice could be had.

all good

Tony Vitello - Tennessee (and why he is unliked)
When he first became a head coach, he was a cocky SOB. He still is, but he hides it better these days.. The guy is a great evaluator of talent imo, and his players really like him from what I can tell. He has built a beast at a school that has never had much of a baseball program. He likes to play Gorilla Ball. The more home runs.. the better. The guy is a great coach and will do well wherever he goes if he keeps pouring as much time and effort into building what he now built.. and he is only 45 years old.

Jim Schlossnagle - Texas A&M
Built a great program at TCU (Vitello was an assistant coach for him). Took them to 6 CWS, but no hardware. A&M made a great hire to steal him away. He has now taken the Aggies to Omaha in 2 of his 3 seasons.. finishing tied for 3rd in 2022, and 2nd in 2024. The guy is a great evaluator, like Vitello, and he teaches plate discipline at the plate, which is different than most coaches, but it yields a lot of walks and it puts an enormous amount of pressure on the opposing pitcher. Great coach and only 53 or 54 years old.

Both guys are great imo.. but what makes their programs elite is their pitching coach. Frank Anderson at Tennessee and Max Weiner at A&M are both elite. Frank is old and Max is young.. but the results are hard to ignore.

Kevin O'Sullivan - Florida
Another great coach. He has been at Florida for 16 years. 9 trips to Omaha. 1 NC and 2 Runner-Ups. I don't know as much about his coaching philosophy as the other 2, but the results speak for themselves.

All 3 are in the Top 10 of highest paid coaches and all 3 would be amazing hires at Texas. I would happy with any of them for different reasons, but all could win a NC at Texas. Whoever CDC wants and can land is good with me.

Hope this helps.

Thanks BigBro, that helps fill in some gaps nicely for me. And it is a great start!

Let's see if any others have their favorites to offer, and why they like them.

I've always been a 90+% football guy, but since the SEC has such a track record with baseball (esp. recently), seems a good time to take a crash course. I am picking up a fair amount by osmosis on the main boards, but it is nice to be able to easily ask such questions here amongst fellow travelers.

I personally agree with the three BigBro listed but I'd like to throw a guy not many of us have named, Cliff Godwin. He coaches East Carolina. Fantastic coach, led his mid-major team to the NCAA Tourney every year except one, has lead ECU to 4 Super Regionals (The school has only ever had 5, 4 of those being led by Godwin), good recruiter, knows the Carolinas/Georgia well.

Nice candidate to consider

Schloss is the man for the job. He was successful at TCU (under CDC) and revived aggys so so program and is now coming back to CDC. There are other good baseball coaches we could have gotten, Schloss is by far the best fit to take Longhorn baseball back to where it was not that long ago. It may not happen immediately since recruiting under Pierce was falling off a cliff, but I could see a deep CWS run in 3 seasons if not sooner. Having said that, CDC needs to get real grass back in the Disch asap...that's been a recruiting Achilles heel for some time now.
