Wondering whatever happened with Terry Bowden at Auburn

Was thinking about coaching changes that a school might wish they’d never made (e.g., Slocum for us).
As a non-SEC guy (at the time), it seemed strange that a guy could go undefeated in his first year, then leave halfway through one season after being in the SECCG.
Barners ever second guess that move?

Bowden was a fantastic move. You must not remember history well.

Lots of off-the-field issues, so when he crashed and burned to start off the season, his days were numbered. He just got off before they could push him off, really. Would he have survived? Maybe, but some people just want to go ahead and control their own destiny.

Like I said, was not an SEC guy at the time, and AlGore had not invented TD yet.

Bowden got caught porking a major boosters daughter that worked in the athletic offices.

He coached at UNA and sucked it up a little while back.

Tommy Bowden went to Tulane and Terry went to shite in a hurry.

According to Bowden he quit paying players. After an Auburn assistant who is no longer in coaching and is named in the book, showed him the ledger book and how much they were being paid. He then told the assistant to finish paying the ones on the books and no more, and the assistant, per Bowden said "you'll regret it". This is all in Bowden's book and per him and is no big disclosure since it all went public. Rodney Garner, his top recruiter left at some point and went to UT where he recruited he best three players in Atlanta and I seem to remember at least two of them made All America. And helped make Fulmer a household name and win a national title I think. As an aside Georgia hired Coach Garner away from UT under the coach who was fired and replaced by Mark Richt. Seemingly for several years Garner, the best recruiter in the South, would get offers to leave just before signing day and get a big raise from Saint Richt. He finally did go back to Auburn and has recruited and coached the best DL anywhere, maybe even better than the touted one @ Clemson. Featuring such five stars as Davidson and D Brown. And with great players sitting behind great players. Much of this was in Bowden's book and by his accounting. And the part about the great players currently @ AU is obvious. They follow Coach Garner and he gets the best out of them seemingly.
None of this is a secret or any great "insider" disclosure. It was in a book and blew up again a few years ago in the newspapers when Bowden and Coach Garner went public with their feud and accounting all over again. Believe what you will. And much of this is Bowden's accounting about what happened. Garner pretty much kept his mouth shut about details but took some shots at TB.

quote:No. Getting rid of Tater-tot brought in Tuberville. That gave us the LSU rivalry, six in a row over Bama and the undefeated 2004 season.
Barners ever second guess that move?
Bama is probably glad it happened, because six in a row gave them Saban.
Saban in turn was the direct cause of Tuberville getting the ax, which lead to Auburn hiring the Chiz, getting Cam and winning it all in 2010.
I think we all thank Tater-tot for being the flapping butterfly wing that won Auburn the 2010 natty.

Actually the UA booster in Memphis gave Bama Saban and AU six in a row. Tubs just happened to the coach of record. So the Memphis booster's make good gift to Bama was Saban by bringing the program to a low point so that they got busy doing the things support and coaching wise necessary to get back on top.

Tommy Bowden left for Tulane and Terry was left with Jimbo Fisher. Once the last of Dye's recruits were gone Tot had nothing but his dad's rejects on the roster. And he loved cocaine.

Yeah, I'm sure the son of ol' Diddy "Boys will be boys" Bowden was as honest as the day is long and not merely covering his own incompetent arse.

At least Bowden was able to get the Bama game shifted from Legion Field to a home & home. So there's is that.

That was Dye, not Bowden.

UA coach Terry Bowden said, with caveats, that not completing the shutout was disappointing.

Bowden came in and took over a Pat Dye team. Dye did not want to leave but he did to mitigate the NCAA fallout.
Dye stayed very involved in that 1993 team. He was often at practice, in the locker room, etc. Plus Bowden kept a lot of Dyes staff. Check out the video of the AU locker room after the 1993 iron bowl. Pat Dye steps up on the podium and addresses the team, then when he is done calls Bowden over to lead the team in prayer, lol.
Anyway, I credit a lot of 93 and 94 to Dyes former players and staff. After that Bowden was inconsistent and had about a .500 record at AU. And a lot of that was due to D. Craig who was Michael Vick before Michael Vick at AU.
