Or trying to get away from it.
Of all the cliche Auburn talking points, the one where they, the state’s historical agricultural school, try to pretend it’s more worldly than the state it’s located in is probably my favorite.

It was East AL Male College before it was API.
API, didn't their games used to come on WAPI radio?

Because the University mission changed.
On top of the fact that everybody called us "Auburn" anyway.
Here's a picture of the front page of the Atlanta Journal from February 20, 1892.
Upper left corner: "Auburn wins".
Not API.
Not Alabama Polytech.
Auburn.
Here's a print of the 1913 Tiger's squad:

So not only did others refer to us as Auburn, we referred to ourselves as Auburn as well.
Changing it to Auburn was just a formality. As you said above, changing it to "University" was the important change.

Nope, it was the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama before it was API.
It was East Alabama Male College before it was the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama.
It was East Alabama Male College until 1872. During that time it was run by the Methodist Church.
After the church turned the college over to the state in 1872, it was renamed the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama.
Simultaneously, the state designated it Alabama's land-grant institution because they knew that the precious pampered lawyer's children in Tuscaloosa would never take the opportunity to get some dirt under their fingernails. That was what the "help" was for.

Somebody's got to plow those fields.
By the way, bring some tomatoes by my office. I'll leave a 20 at the front desk for you. Uhh, please clean your boots before coming inside. Ok boy?

Absolutely 100% hand on a thousand Bibles true story.....
I met an elderly lady the other day. I had my Auburn hat on. She said "Auburn"? I gave her a "War Eagle". She said, and I quote.....
"I have two granddaughters who graduated from FSU. My grandson applied to FSU but was turned down. He goes to Alabama".
She went on to tell me that their vet, who they love, is an Auburn grad.

I think I know why. It is not as funny as some of these post, which is fine because this thread is an attempted troll. But for those who wish to know, I can tell you.
I was helping my uncle move who graduated from Auburn in the 50's and I came across his "Alabama Polytechnic Institute" degree, and I asked him. He said the school had been called Auburn for decades when he went there. He said though the school hadn't changed their name officially yet, students and alumni referred to it as Auburn simply because Alabama Polytechnic Institute is too long of a name, when you can just say Auburn and everybody knows who you mean. Newspapers chose to call it Auburn in their sports section because it took up less space in their columns.Since the media called it Auburn, it became known as Auburn about 100 years ago, but not was not officially changed until 1960 he told me. He also told me it was the fourth official name of the school.

They were going to call it Harvard, then they discovered a school in Boston had already claimed that name.
Bummer.
