In sports, Texas owns UT. Tennessee can't use it for sports, they sold their rights to it to Texas, so Tennessee is officially not UT. They can use it for everything else though. Other colleges could own the rights to UG and so on.

Sup man? Just been kind of avoiding the flamefest. After reading basically the same three threads over and over again with subtle changes in verbiage, it got kind of old.
Maybe now that Ice has put his foot down, it'll get a bit more tolerable.

University of Virginia goes by UVA.
It is in charlottesville.

University of Texas , Tennessee, and Tampa all go by UT.
University of new jersey goes by Rutgers.
I guess it is up to the school's people to decide what to call their own school.
