Why Can LSU Not Develop Defensive Players Any More?

Defense used to be the hallmark of LSU football. They turned three stars into solid players and they turned 4 and 5 stars into beasts. But now, they don’t. LSU fans blame their bad defense on youth and lack of talent. But when you look at it there were a slew of highly ranked seniors and juniors starting at the beginning of the season. Here are the classes and recruiting ratings of their starting defense against USC. Why have LSU coaches been unable to develop them?
DE: Swinson (Sr.) 3*
DE: Jones (Sr.) 4*
DT: Paez (GR) 3*
DT: Guillory (Sr.) 4*
LB: Penn (Sr.) 4*
LB: Perkins (Jr.) 5*
Star: Burns (Sr.) 4*
Safety: Gilbert (Jr.) 4*
Safety: Allen (Soph.) 3*
CB: Stamps (Soph.) 3*
CB: Ryan (Jr.) 4*
Nine of their starters were Upperclassmen (Jr. or Sr.) , and seven of the starting eleven were 4 star or better recruits.

Perkins would have ran down Milroe. We left our white guy Whit Weeks to spy Milroe.

Brian Kelly is what he has always been, a slightly above average coach that wilts in the face of any real competition.

Perkins didn’t do it last year. Why do you think he would have this year? Whit Weeks was a 4* recruit. And from what I have seen, he is better than Perkins.

You are of course trolling but it is something of a valid point. Even injured, Some NFL team will take a flyer on Perkins in the first round of the draft. Guillory is coming back. Still, we have been sorely lacking in that department, especially at DB.
But you seem to like trolling more than actual discussion, so explain to me how a team with SEVEN five star linebackers can shite the bed and lose two games with the greatest defensive head coach in the history of college football? And do it again the season after he leaves?

DE: Swinson (Sr.) 3* - has developed into very good player
DE: Jones (Sr.) 4* - has not developed much
DT: Paez (GR) 3* - first year at LSU, he's fine
DT: Guillory (Sr.) 4* - injured, out for season, very much missed
LB: Penn (Sr.) 4* - still sucks
LB: Perkins (Jr.) 5* - injured, out for season
Star: Burns (Sr.) 4* - terrible
Safety: Gilbert (Jr.) 4* - first year at LSU, he is what he is, not great
Safety: Allen (Soph.) 3* - still young 3 star, we'll see
CB: Stamps (Soph.) 3* - young 3 star, better than was ranked
CB: Ryan (Jr.) 4* - bust
Not sure why you left off starting CB Zy Alexander who has developed into one of the better CBs in the league.

It is a legitimate question yet also trolling? Interesting.
I think it is a very valid point of concern and you just don’t like it being pointed out.
I have read LSU fans saying this defense is young, inexperienced and lacking any talent. But when you look at it, LSU has one of the most experienced and talented starting defenses in the SEC. Yet they rank 13th in total defense and 13th in scoring defense. And that is with the highest paid coordinator in college football coaching them.
Alabama as you pointed out is also underperforming. Alabama fans have gone bonkers over it this season. They are ranked 10th in total defense and 5th in scoring defense. Scoring defense is what wins and loses games. So while they have underperformed they are not that bad. And they seem to be improving as the year goes on. LSU seems to be getting worse.
So back to my question, why do you think LSU’s defense has been so atrocious?

I went off of this Nola.com article. They had Alexander listed as a backup rotational player for the opening game. That is why I did not list him as a starter.
LSU Projected Starting Defense Against USC

Alexander didn't play against USC (and really would have helped), because he was not cleared from last year's ACL injury. Last time I looked, he was leading the SEC in PFF grades at corner.

He sure didn't last year.
Oh, and if you want to see bad, check out the angle Sage Ryan had on Milroe on the fourth touchdown. He ran a U-turn instead of getting in Milroe's way.
Must bad defense and not what we want as LSU fans.

Do you ignore the plethora of posts from LSU fans saying the same thing I am? That LSU’s defense is horrible and they should be better. Are they trolling too?
Or do you just not like other fanbases pointing out the obvious?
Maybe if one of you can figure out WHY LSU’s defense has become trash somebody can fix the problem. But if not, it will just make for more entertaining melts from certain fans while others will be relegated to the back of milk cartoons.

So he didn’t start against USC. So I was correct not to list him. Thanks for confirming that. Like I said, I used the starting lineup in the first game.

Your fellow LSU fan just said Zy Alexander is the highest rated cornerback in the SEC this season.

If you swap Alexander (a 4* recruit) in for Stamps (a 3* recruit) that gives LSU 8 starters instead of 7 who are 4* or better. That makes the performance of this LSU defense even more abhorrent. And it knocks an even bigger hole in the argument that LSU just doesn’t have anything to work with.
But by all means, go right ahead.

That’s called a business decision to avoid getting run over. And that shite gets you benched at other programs.
