Interesting point on football holding calls....didn't bama recently go an entire YEAR w/o a holding call ? HOW is that even remotely possible ?

This, but in the SEC it trends more towards officiating as the problems listed are the same for all conferences, but you do not see good teams struggling or being blown out by bad teams on the road in the B1G and ACC as much as you do in the SEC.
Aren't the officials in the SEC and ACC largely the same group of guys? Teddy Valentine, Tony Greene, etc. these guys are referees in a number of leagues.

Yes there is no such thing as SEC officials. The officials working SEC games tonight will most likely be working another conferences games tomorrow.

That's what I thought. I believe they operate as independent contractors and can officiate in as many leagues as they want to.

This is true. Obviously some guys prefer working some conferences, but they will still find work in other conferences.

1: Fans are closer to the court and have a greater emotional impact on the game. Basketball is much more impulsive and emotional than football, with time between every play.
2: Refs are intimidated by home crowds much moreso than other sports.
3: Shooting at foreign baskets is a bigger deal than most think.

You see mainly the same group of crews doing SEC games.
You don't see these crews doing Cuse vs Duke, Ohio St. vs Wisconsin, Michigan vs. Indian, UNC vs Maryland, etc.
If that makes sense.
Nolan use to say to win on the road you had to beat your opponent and the refs.

That is a problem too.
During Maui the crew that did our game vs Minnesota was reffing a game in Florida the next night.

Yep, sounds like we read the same article earlier this year

I almost used that exact example earlier

I passively watch basketball when ever games are on, watching UGA/LSU right now.
I watched our game vs minn, then was flipping through the channels the next day and caught that game, then noticed the refs looks familiar, then realized it was the same crew.

familiarity with the court and the way the mind judges distance based on the surroundings (ceiling height, lighting, dimensions beyond the court, etc.) likely has a lot to do with it.
This is a huge reason, actually.
Back when the Spurs used to play in the Alamodome (football stadium), opponents used to remark about how different it was to shoot in an arena with a bigger backdrop than the typical NBA arena.
