What is it about Ohio State?

I don't understand how or why some university in Columbus Ohio is able to dominate recruiting like they are. This is supposedly the NIL era where only big-money big-market schools can recruit - that's what we were told.

Yet we have OSU basically taking whoever they want, despite having an embarrassing season last year where they missed the playoffs and lost to Missouri in the bowl game.

Ryan Day has shown time and time again that he can't win the big games. He's a loser.

Why do so many damned elite recruits want to go there?

I don't get it. Everyone says it's about $$$ but you're a complete moron if you think schools like Texas and Florida etc can't compete with Ohio State money. It's something else.

To be fair, what is it about Alabama? Yeah we have a more successful history. But it’s Alabama lol

And I love the tide!!

They have lots of high school talent within like 250 miles

They are the lone B1G / SEC in the state

They cheat better than most

They are a Top 5 state in population

Since the 1950's they benefitted the most from the Walter Beyers / NCAA dictatorship

Just consistently good. Overrated a lot of the time, but no denying the consistency.

I hate them, but i get it.

A huge chunk of UF alumni aren’t even from Florida and go back to the state they came from after graduation. It’s hard to have a huge NIL collective when a lot of your student body isn’t staying in the state and making contributions.

I have a friend who lived in Columbus for a certain amount of time for work. OSU pretty much runs that city. It’s the city’s largest employer and almost everyone that works there is rabid about the football program. Plus OSU has a small but powerful concentration of Jewish donors such as Les Wexner and the Schottenstein family.

Columbus is a huge city with more people than Cincinnati and Cleveland COMBINED. Outside of Cbus, it's farm land and a lot of talent comes from them corn-pone-fed kuntry boyz...

Probable other reason is their coaches are absolutely dynamic as men and coaches. Brian Hartline WR coach speaks for itself.... Larry Johnson DL coach speaks for itself.....DB coach Tim Walton, who Jalen Ramsey said was his best coach ever, is an absolute terror in recruiting, and now James laurinaitis LB coach and all pro is lighting up recruiting in his 1st full year. Add in that new guy at RB coach (Carlos Locklyn) and you have the complete package. Laurinaitis, Hartline, and Walton are alumni and former pros so it would be easy to recruit, in my opinion. I'm not even mentioning Ryan Day's buddy Chip Kelly as his OC, one of the best offensive minds
ever, not in recruiting, but just in calling plays, which apparently is all he wants to do. Pretty impressive.

High Schoolers are scared to play in the SEC so they go to a team in a weaker conference

You don’t think OSU is a big money, big market team? Ohio has 12 million people and the Columbus metro has 1.7 million. And nearly all of them are OSU fans with no major in state competition on a fall Saturday. OSU puts players in the NFL, and hasn’t had a truly bad season in decades. Why shouldn’t they be able to recruit elite players with ease?

Ever been to Columbus?

It’s a legit great city with absolutely nothing else to do from a sports perspective but focus on Ohio state football.

Tons of fans and a very good economy to help support NIL.

Also Ohio state puts people in the nfl at a high clip.

It’s that simple.

It’s a large population state with an extremely loyal and passionate home fanbase. Being such a large school they also have an expansive alumni base throughout the country.

They play a lot of marquee prime time games and have been a pretty frequent name when it’s coming down to the end of the season.

Kids want to go where the big games are played.

Also, some of these kids probably realize if they are hoping to take their game to the NFL, they better show what they can do playing in the elements. Once you reach the top level, chances are pretty high you’re not going to be able to play most of your seasons below the Mason-Dixon line throughout a career.

It's the 7th most populated state (vs AL at 24) but very similar to Alabama in composition of population... It's got a lot of fans and some very big boosters... It's not hard really to figure this one out

Maybe unsatisfying but this is the answer. Couple of power schools in every conference. Get the right coach and the rich get richer.

Also easy to forget how big tOSU is and how populous the state/region are.
Remember state has 20 electoral votes.

Like Alabama, their fans just expect to win and are willing to shell out the dollars and black facial hair spray. Expectations really set the tone for a thing like winning.

They churn out enough talent that Kentucky has been able to build up their program by poaching from Ohio.

The other advantage they have is that until the recent return of Michigan to the upper ranks of college football they dominated the Big 10. When you are winning conference titles left and right, playing for national titles, and putting up 10+ win seasons regularly it is a lot easier to get people to come to your school.

You don’t understand the butt hurt generated when Michigan beat them and then won a championship.

They are at Chernobyl/Fukushima levels of meltdown right now.

In response to the Michigan championship their boosters have gone nuts throwing stupid money around like there’s no tomorrow.

It’s why they got Caleb Downs and it’s why they’re signing blue chip prospects. Theyre giving guys rookie NFL money to play up there and you can’t blame a prospect for taking it.

It’s not against the rules, it’s just rich people losing their mind due to their insecurities upsetting the market for players.
