Was Peyton's greatest college achievement the 1997 team?

Still lost to Florida who he never beat
Beat an average Auburn team by 1 point in SEC title game.
Got hammered by Nebraska in bowl game.
Did not finish in top 5 in 1997
Runner up in Heisman because voters hated dirty Phillip Fulmer.
At a true elite football school like Alabama, Georgia, LSU this season would be just good season not great. But Tennessee fans remember this as an elite all time team.

Peyton Manning: great guy and great quarterback.
It's amazing what that Denver Super Bowl victory did for his legacy.
Came out of college with the reputation as a choker. Had the same reputation in the NFL until the Colts were fortunate enough to go up against the Rex Grossman led Bears in the Super Bowl.
Then the Colts would have home field advantage in the playoff just about every year after that and choke. The Broncos Super Bowl, even though he was way past his prime, got him over the mountain however.
Can't really talk shite. Legacy secure.

The following year they won the title with a worse QB because they finally decided to play defense rather than spotting Florida 35 like they did every year he was there.

Probably turning the tables on the Alabama rivalry.

"Way past his prime" doesn't really describe Manning in his last season. He went from an elite level of play to completely shot about as fast as you can snap your fingers.

They even lost to Memphis.

FSU played their 3rd string qb.

Nebraska had a really strong team, but Peyton was hurt in the Arkansas game. He wasn't a super mobile quarterback, but he was even less mobile than usual for the rest of the season. So he really deserves credit for beating Auburn for the SEC title.

He was a great game manager that season. I never liked that dude until he came to Denver. When they won the Superbowl (and as a bonus beating and exposing Cam), I thought Peyton was a QB great. For that I can overlook that he was a Vile.

Peyton Manning should have won more. Nothing to show for a hell of a lot of talent with the viles. Too many great Indy teams to count and one championship says a lot. Eli won 2 at New York and there was no comparison to the talent Peyton had with the Colts.
One Super Bowl with the Colts and not even an SEC Championship with the Viles. The resume speaks for itself.

Outzen helped the Seminoles during one of their most challenging times in the 1998 season.
FSU was shorthanded at quarterback following season-ending injuries to Dan Kendra (spring game) and Weinke (Nov. 7 against Virginia).
So easy

When Chokes-a-ton Manning choked in the 05-06 AFC Divisional Round to the hated Steelers, I just could not. He blamed his O-line after the game. Mike Vanderchoke missed a game-tying FG. The pick six to Tracy Porter was a thing of beauty.

The same third stringer that was good enough to beat a damn good Florida team? Oh by the way, in this magical scenario where FSU has healthy QBs, do we get Jamal Lewis back? I think having one of the top five running backs in the country would have made Tennessee even better.

Tennessee had a lot more help than that.
