Here's an article from 2014...
quote:

James Skelton, catcher for the Lancaster Barnstormers, wears nail polish and gets professional manicures. His colors of choice are white with a yellow stripe down the middle, and he wants the design on four fingers, right hand only.

That’s because Skelton, like many catchers, knows doing so makes the signs to his pitcher more visible. Those signs are the catcher’s way of telling his pitcher the types of pitches to throw and where to place them and it’s their only means of communicating during the game.

quote:

Sometimes he wears nail polish. Other times he wears stickers, known as “Game Signs,” or tape or just old-fashioned Wite-Out (liquid paper).

He says his pitchers appreciate it. “Some guys don’t see as well at night,” he explains.

I did too (through the early 00s), played catcher, and I didn’t use any of that either. I just know guys have been doing that awhile now

I only played little league in the mid-1980s. I’m not a baseball person.

It’s become a lot more widespread now. When my brother played in the early 00s, most of the guys were using athletic tape or White Out.

Problem is tape gets dirty. A good mani will last you a series.

I've seen them paint a line down the finger from the tip to the knuckle too with the white out. Almost looks like a skeleton.

I think I have seen that, but would never have remembered it until your post here.

It seemed it was more common 20+ years ago at least in MLB. I remember seeing Javy Lopez do it with the Braves in the 90's.I really don't see it as much anymore.

I honestly haven’t noticed it until tonight. For some reason it shows up really easily with the Vandy catcher.

When I played back in HS, I saw some catchers wrapping white tape on their fingers to help the pitcher see the signs during night games. My catcher never did that, and I remember one night throwing a slider when he signaled for a change up. The batter swung and missed for a strikeout, but our catcher totally missed the ball — didn’t even get his glove on it. The ball went to the backstop and the batter reached first base. The catcher came up to the mound totally pissed at me. Well, that bastard should have painted his nails.

Just so you know, they sell fingernail stickers for baseball catchers, I think most of the pros use the stickers, they sell them at Walmart, Amazon etc

Tell me you don't watch baseball without telling me you don't watch baseball.

Years ago some catchers would wrap white tape at the ends of their fingers. Now paint. Whatever it takes to help the pitcher see the signs better.

Why are his fingernails painted orange? Before I make fun of him (he might be doing this for some kid with cancer), I wanted to see if anyone knows why?

I take it that baseball isn’t something you regularly watch?
