He's definitely the shortest branch of the tree.

woooo, definitely not on enough to be on this "tree".

Nutt brought him to the college ranks.

The way a coaching tree works is a HC hires an assistant who goes on to become a head coach. Former assistant coaches can be members of multiple coaching trees.

Current SEC head coaches coaching trees:

Bert - Dave Doren, Paul Chryst

Les Miles - Bo Pelini, Mike Gundy, Jimbo Fisher, Larry Porter

Nick Saban - Bobby Williams, Pat Shurmur, Mark Dantonio, Brad Salem, Josh McDaniels, Derek Dooley, Jimbo Fisher, Will Muschamp, Jason Garrett, Scott Linehan, Mike Mularky, Jim McElwain

Mark Richt - Neil Callaway, Brian VanGorder

Steve Spurrier - Carl Franks, Barry Wilson, Charlie Strong, Ron Zook, GA Mangus, Bob Stoops, Buddy Teevens, Marvin Lewis, Hue Jackson

Kevin Sumlin - Dana Holgorson, Tony Levine, Kliff Kingsbury

Dan Mullen - Mark Hudspeth

Gary Pinkel - ?

Gus Malzahn - Josh Floyd

nah interested in houston nutt coaching tree sessed

gus is one of the more successful limbs on the nut tree. it's crazy that gus has made all the way to where he's at because nutt gave him the chance to coach on the collegiate level. not to mention all that he learned from nutt about developing QB's...

Hes only 32. He has a bright future ahead of him...he will probably be a good head coach somewhere one day. I know a few people wanted to give him a look for our job last year. He has his work cut out for him with locker at QB though

If he keeps it up, I wouldn't be surprised to see him get a shot at being a HC in the NFL someday soon.

If my memory is correct, Nick Saban hired John Thompson as defensive coordinator at LSU prior to the 2000 season. He left before the season started to work under Houston Nutt. Very smart move.

What? No David Lee??

He must be part of someone else's coaching tree.

So he is not the most successful one and Dale was trolling about Malzahn and being the typical hypocrite he is

Actually, it probably was a smart move. Thompson is very much a control freak and not the easiest to work with, so I imagine mixing him with Saban would have had the same result as Mike Markuson being Beilema's OL coach.

Hell, Spurrier demoted him from DC to position coach in the middle of his first season at SC. He fired him at the end of the season.

As an opposing fan, this is one guy I had my eye on. I really liked the O-lines that he developed at Arkansas.

I was surprised when he got bounced at Wisconsin.
