Teen in crash that killed Auburn announcer says he fell asleep at wheel

If there’s any good to come out of this, it’s that this young man’s life is probably not totally ruined by a prison sentence.

Life .... it throws us curves from time to time.
I actually met Rod in 2006 in the press box and he was a super nice guy. Very talented from what I had been told. Never got a chance to hear him call a game live but he had heard my pregame show on the way into the stadium and asked about a point of trivia I had mentioned and if he could use it during the broadcast.
On another note, as a young man serving in the Army, a buddy of mine fell asleep at the wheel when we were on our way back to Columbus from Orlando during a weekend leave when we partied too hard and didn't get enough sleep. So I can relate .... we rear-ended a car pulled over changing its tire with the cruise set on 75 ... I went through the windshield and survived.
Falling asleep at the wheel has caused many a highway fatality.
Life is not easy.

I’ve fallen asleep at the wheel a few times. Hella scary, been very lucky to come out of it ok.

So terrible. I can’t imagine the burden that this 16 year old has to live with the rest of his life now. I can’t imagine how I’d be able to handle something like that at 16 years old

Arkansas legend Brandon Burlsworth passed away after falling asleep at the wheel. Driving while sleep deprived is as dangerous as driving while drunk.

Me too. Not at 6pm on a Saturday though. Apparently the excuse is he was at the lake all day for Memorial Day.
I’ve spent many full days on the lake/ Tennessee River as well.
Still doesn’t make sense to me.

They say 90% of people with narcolepsy don't know they suffer from it. People with mild conditions of it, are most prone to falling asleep while driving. They say the road can hypnotize.

The thing I don't understand is, where the accident happened the speed limit couldn't be more than 35mph. How does a rear end collision cause this much damage at that speed?

He must have really accelerated after falling asleep. One victim had head injuries and the other internal (can’t remember which), so that is puzzling, being rear-ended.

35 mph hitting a stopped car is a massive amount of energy.
Much over 15 mph is going to be bad. Brakes usually get the car slowed down by 70% or more before an impact. This one hit them full on.

A while back, I hit a car that pulled out right in front of me. I was doing 35 mph and the driver said they never saw me. Didn't have time to brake. Good thing I hit the back/left side of their car instead of the driver door.
