Just curious about the dynamics over there in the Palmetto State.

Even split. Kind of remarkable when you compare our histories, especially recently.

My question is why are neither located in Charleston? The University of South Carolina should be in Charleston. That’s as SEC as it gets.

No experience with Clemson, but I’ve always had a blast when I’ve gone to Columbia. Great atmosphere and cool fans. Williams-Brice gets loud.

Columbia v Charleston could be argued to be an even bigger rivalry than Carolina v Clemp -
bottom line - State Leg wanted a centrally located University - especially circa 1801 -
and FTR - Carolina has more fans and more Alum in SC - WNC is tater country stronghold with their sister school in Cullowhee - Clemps has more fans in GA too - but they're wearing Red N Black more often these days -

quote:Depends on where you go. The upstate is about 70-30 clemsux but Rock Hill (Charlotte), Columbia and Charleston are mostly South Carolina. I would be guessing but I would say overall it's about 60-40 South Carolina. You can usually tell by the athletic gear amounts for sell in the local areas. The midlands and coast are heavy South Carolina and the upstate is clemsux.

It has always looked to me like there were more USC fans in SC than Auburn with a lake fans.....which is pretty unusual considering the disparity in the 2 programs success. Clem's boy fans are a cult and they do not really fit in with what one would consider the south, as strange as they seems...
South Carolina fans are also far better folks on average.

I can say this, when we flew to Pheonix and made the drive to Glendale for the title game I had never seen so many fans. It almost looked like the desert the sea of orange was so big. We won that game against Clemson and DeShaun Watson but then the very next year, Clemson and us rematched in Tampa and I swear thee were even more At Raymond James. That still holds the most fans ever at a football game in that stadium and it was even inside the stadium, but a million of them outside

South Carolina has more fans. Charleston is a pretty good barometer since it's mostly Clemson fans in Greenville and mostly South Carolina fans in Columbia. I'd say there's at least a 60-40 split of South Carolina vs Clemson fans in Charleston.

Charleston sucks. Takes you 30 minutes to go 3 miles, and it’s Golf Hell.

I’m really not exaggerating, I truly think I’ve seen more Ohio State gear in Charleston than South Carolina, Clemson, The Citadel, or College of Charleston …

I believe it.
But it kind of makes sense. Ohio is cold and gray for large parts of the year. Where is the nearest, nice beach to get to?

there's been an influx of O-hi-yokels - they have to wear their shite all the time because none of the rest of us engage them - they do it to find their surfeit of skunks -

Living here for a couple of years now, i would say it is more SC fans than Clemson. About a 60-40/ 55-45 split.

A quick Google search says The University of South Carolina has 325,000 alumni and Clemson has 189,000 alumni. I think that's pretty close to the overall split in the state ~ 65/35.
Obviously the upstate is more Clemson and Columbia is more USC. Other large population areas - Charleston, Florence, etc. tend to lean USC.
One poster made an interesting comment - Clemson fans tend to wear their colors all the time. Carolina is more subdued. For example, we're in a supper club. 5 couples are Carolina, 3 are Clemson and 1 is unaffiliated. The Clemson supporters always wear something orange - maybe a Tiger Paw on a golf shirt but always something, the Carolina supporters never do. I only wear Carolina stuff at a Carolina event.
It's not like I don't want anyone to know who I support. - Hell, I get tearful while hearing Alma Mater - we're proud to be Gamecocks!
