SOS and CFP Ranking

The current CFP ranking is pretty meaningless but it is interesting how SOS can seriously impact odds of making the CFP.
(CFP/SOS)
Oregon 1 /21
Ohio State 2 / 9
Texas 3 /10
Penn State 4 / 15
Indiana 5 / 62
Notre Dame 6 / 32
Alabama 7 / 2
Miami 8 / 25
Ole Miss 9 / 5
Georgia 10 / 1
Tennessee 11 / 7
Boise State 12 / 68
If this were the final CFP before the games started its obvious some of these teams do not belong. Several of them would have at least one more loss if their SOS were around 25 instead of 35, most likely.
Some of these teams are playing a different game than the rest....notably those from the SEC. The 5 teams in this list from the SEC SOS average is 5. The Big10 is 26th. Even removing Indiana, who obviously does not belong on this list, the BIG10 teams average 15th in SOS. What that means over a 12 game regular season and however many games in the post season is more games against talented teams with loads of depth who are more physical....and more injuries and way more dents and dings. There is never going to be a way to level the playing field here....the SEC and BIG10 are simply playing a different game than the rest of the nation.

As soon as they included the lesser conference champions in the playoff selection equation, strength of schedule had to go out the window.
Translation, like DEI, they are selecting the best/most qualified teams, so there will be a number of teams left out of the playoffs who could beat Boise St., the Big 12 Champion and Indiana easily.

Is this SOS real in your graph ?
Posted on 11/21/24 at 8:21 am to Old1937
Hell NO!
Quit providing BS data! As soon as I saw Texas with a #9 SOS?
Even Texas fans looked sideways at that.
Texas is #38 SOS.
Oregon is worse at #42
Miami is #54
Boise is #77
ND is #82
Indiana is #106
This CFP committee is CLUELESS!
SOS has zero consideration. Flash and national media hype are more critical apparently.
This need to address the rankings. Bring back the damn computer algorithm and eliminate all the damn personal biased. Rather be pissed at an algorithm than CFP members pocketing cash for their votes. Total crap show.

No one knows the metrics the committee uses but after this Sat if Texas is still # 3 they will make the playoffs win or lose at Aggieland.

People get strength of record confused with strength of schedule.

Any SOS system that has Texas as the 10th hardest is complete garbage.

Metrics are a side note to justify the decisions they make. They are going to do what they want to do. But you can bet they are well aware of the money involved and who they need to appease. In the end SEC and Big 10 will be happy, ACC and Big 12 not so much.

I brought this up in a thread prior when discussing the playoffs. The SEC teams are significantly more battle tested, and it will show when things play out in the matchups.

Makes sense but the fact is that about half of the current CFP top 12 are not playing the same game as the other half. The SEC teams in particular are playing a MUCH more difficult game.

I have not watched Boise State this season but I have a watched them a little in the past and what they used to do, and may still, is play disciplined, mistake free football....and it worked very well until they met a talented and deep team and then it fell apart. Occasionally the talented deep team would make some key mistakes and keep it close and even lose but they never had the horses, and probably do not now, to keep up if they had to play a Big10, let alone SEC, schedule....

The fall out of the IU / OSU game this weekend is going to be very interesting. If IU loses and the CFP just slots IU in as a "Power 4" 1 loss team and still in the playoff, it is going to be wild and send a very clear message that "Power 4" teams should absolutely water down their schedules as much as they can. IU would not have a single quality win all year.
And if IU finds a way to win, where does Ohio State end up?
They would then have only 1 ranked win on their schedule over Penn State who in turn has basically zero quality wins on their schedule (7-3 Illinois at a generous CFP #25 would be it).
We know nothing about the quality of the Big 10 this year. The 4 "good teams" have somewhat avoided each other in conference and here are their OOC games:
Oregon - Idaho, Boise State, Oregon State
Ohio State - Akron, Western Mich, Marshall
Penn St - West Virginia, Bowling Green, Kent State
Indiana - FIU, Western IL, Charlotte
Absolute garbage except for maybe Oregon playing Boise State.
If the Big 10 gets 4 teams in, the message will be very clear regarding scheduling and college football will be worse for it.

If you’re critiquing teams for SOS , big difference for those having too many Mercers and UTEPs vs teams that have OU Mich USC FSU on there Who just happen to suck. Those who have played teams that are having good years should be rewarded but the others should not be overly penalized IMO

Boise is legit this year. They have a Heisman candidate in Ashton Jeanty, who is the best running back I have seen in decades (he went for nearly two hundred yards and three touchdowns against Oregon, who they should have beat; a late PR touchdown did them in). In a one-off game, they can beat anyone this year; however, they wouldn’t hold up in the SEC because they don’t have enough depth. They could make a deep run in playoffs, especially if they get a bye. As an Ole Miss fan, if the Rebs are lucky enough to make the playoffs (I am nervous about FL and State, as horrible as they are), I would hate to see them play BSU even though they win at least five or six times out of ten.

That's likely including future schedule. Texas will get a big jump after playing @ A&M
