Kentucky pulls secondary state students primarily from outside the SEC (mostly Big Ten country). Arkansas does the same plus Texas.
Alabama has 7 states making up at least 3% of their student population (5 South, 1 West, 1 Midwest) 18 states making up at least 1% of their student population.
Texas A&M students have almost zero interaction with anyone from outside the state of Texas (and they are more reliant on Texas than any school on a 2nd state).

2 things that strike me
1. Ole Miss always claims their OOS make up is Dallas kids. Looks like same number are from Memphis
2. Literally no one outside the state of Texas would go to A&M

I would be interested to see a study or roundtable on the changes at some of the schools with lottery systems that now are almost 85-90% in-state kids or at places the opposite, like Alabama.

California has over 10 million more people than Texas. Having a few Cali kids at every school shouldn't be much of a surprise

Sorry our local school systems are good enough to actually send kids to college

I knew 1 person in my 4 years of undergrad and 1 year of graduate school at Alabama form the state of California, Illinois, New York and New Jersey (that was roughly 7-10 years ago).
Those 5 states now make almost 10% of the University population. Crazy.

"The University of Mississippi" being 50% kids from Mississippi is crazy to me
