SEC History - and why teams like Vandy belong

The current SEC was formed in 1932, however, most founding teams have been conference partners since the late 1800s. The SEC was preceded by the Southern Conference, which was preceded by the SIAA (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association). The (2nd) SIAA was started by a Vanderbilt professor and Vanderbilt athletes.
The following is a list of the dates that each current member joined the SEC and it's predecessors (Does not include drop out dates. Bold indicates a team that has stayed grouped with SEC members since the SIAA):
Alabama 1894 (SIAA), 1921 (Southern), 1932 (SEC)
Auburn 1894 (SIAA), 1921 (Southern), 1932 (SEC)
Florida 1912 (SIAA), 1922 (Southern), 1932 (SEC)
Georgia 1894 (SIAA), 1922 (Southern), 1932 (SEC)
Kentucky 1895 (SIAA), 1921 (Southern), 1932 (SEC)
LSU 1895 (SIAA), 1922 (Southern), 1932 (SEC)
Ole Miss 1898 (SIAA), 1922 (Southern), 1932 (SEC)
MSU 1895 (SIAA), 1921 (Southern), 1932 (SEC)
Tennessee 1897 (SIAA), 1921 (Southern), 1932 (SEC)
Vanderbilt 1894 (SIAA), 1922 (Southern), 1932 (SEC)
Arkansas 1992 (SEC)
S. Carolina 1915 (SIAA), 1922 (Southern), 1992 (SEC)
Texas A&M 1903 (SIAA), 2012 (SEC)
Missouri 2012 (SEC
Texas 1895 (SIAA), 2024 (SEC)
Oklahoma 2024 (SEC)
I really don't care how bad Vanderbilt is at football. They have been a brother since 1894 and are largely responsible for creating the greatest football conference to exist. So, the next time one of you thinks that we need to boot them because they aren't pulling their weight, I say to you with great emphasis, "kiss my arse."

Or because they are a private school and the SEC and its members get protection of information.

Today I learned the Longhorns were members of the precursor to the SEC. That basically means we're just coming home after 100+ year sabbatical.

Now that Georgia doesn't play Vanderbilt every season, I'm on the get rid of Vanderbilt bus.

The only way I can see Vandy not staying is if they made a business decision to not be part of the college football league that’s coming.

That’s like saying that because your daddy was governor of Mississippi, you deserve the welfare check you’re getting

They are the offspring of carpet baggers. Their medical school has done a lot of good though, at least when they aren’t castrating children

Vandy has two more baseball titles than Alabama does.

With you 100% on Vanderbilt but not Mizzou or A&M.

Only for turd fans because you suck at everything else.

I mean if that is the case then count SC as an original member. We were around in the SIAA and the Southern conference, so our addition to the SEC makes sense.

I love having them here. I just feel bad for them and hope that someone comes along who can help them compete at football (they sure don't need any help at baseball lol).

We have beaten this dead horse to a bloody pulp. It is not true.
It is true than a high number of Alabama fans completely ignore anything other than football. That is a shame too, because life is more fun with basketball and baseball. I certainly enjoyed watching the NCAA basketball tournament more than I did the football playoffs this past year.
The OG big 4:
Alabama
Auburn
Georgia
Vanderbilt

Agree with you, Landmass!
Vanderbilt has six -- 6 -- unclaimed national titles in football! They were voted #1 in various polls as llsted and recorded by the NCAA Official Records Book: 1906, 1910, 1911, 1918, 1921, and 1922.
Vanderbilt is also the owner of 14 conference titles: 12 in the old SIAA and 2 in the old Southern Conference.
The Commodores football program has produced a total of 7 consensus All-Americans in its history.
Those titles may be a long time ago, but it shows that Vanderbilt once had a very respectable football program.
