Steve Kiner - USA Today
All-American LB from Tennessee, was famous for calling Ole Miss a bunch of mules, earning him the moniker "Heehaw" among Rebel fans, inspiring the "Mule Game" in Jackson 1969.

Mules are amazing animals.

The first OU game I remember vividly watching was the 1968 Orange Bowl between Oklahoma and Tennessee.
Kiner and "Hacksaw" Reynolds were two of the linebackers for Tennessee. They were sophomores that year I believe.
Turned into a pretty formidable duo.

We were 15-2-1 in the old conference the three years he was on the field.
My dad has told me stories about him and said if he’d had a better NFL career he would have had his number retired in Knoxville. He was that good at the time.

quote:
Although sports reporters and media outlets described Ole Miss as having “all the horses” among the athletes on its team, Kiner declared that he saw only “mules.” To make matters worse, Tennessee fans in attendance at the highly anticipated rematch in Jackson wore “Archie Who?” buttons.

“Steve, what about Ole Miss? They got some horses down there.”
“They played like a bunch of mules last year.”
-
They had beat the Rebels 31-0 the previous year and were undefeated going into that game. Ole Miss proceeded to spank that arse.

I was an undergrad at U.T. that year. I heard that somebody brought a jackass to the stadium with 'Steve Kiner' painted on it. Around Knoxville Steve was afterward referred to as the 'mouth of the south'.
