Starting this off by saying I heard this stat on the radio yesterday, and I wasn't sure about it...so I looked it up because it was about my Alma Mater.
In 2022, Tennessee was #1 in the country in TD% in the Red Zone.
In 2023, Tennessee was #106 in the country in TD% in the Red Zone.
They dropped from scoring touchdowns over 79% of the time they were in the Red Zone, to around 52%.
If you look Red Zone TD% from last year, the current SEC teams were ranked:
9. LSU - 75.38%
21. Alabama - 69.23%
22. Georgia - 69.14%
23. Kentucky - 69.05%
25. Oklahoma - 68.66%
30. Florida - 66.67%
30 - South Carolina - 66.67%
33. Ole Miss - 66.10%
39. Vanderbilt - 64.71%
40. Auburn - 64.71%
59. Arkansas - 62.16%
61. Missouri - 62.07%
82. aTm - 59.02
106. Tennessee - 51.85%
113. Miss. St. - 51.28%
120. Texas - 50.82%
I thought TD% would be important...but what is more important is TDS scored in the Red Zone. If you are in the Red Zone a lot more...you can survive with a lower conversion percentage.
Red Zone TDs scored last year were:
1. Georgia - 56
4. LSU - 49
10. Oklahoma - 46
15. Ole Miss - 39
21. Missouri - 36
21. Bama - 36
21. aTm - 36
41. Florida - 32
48. Texas - 31
59. Kentucky - 29
63. Tennessee - 28
72. Auburn - 27
92. Arkansas - 23
97. Vanderbilt - 22
109. Miss St. - 20
The guys on the radio were emphasizing how important the Red Zone TD% is...they completely discounted the real point...it's the number of TDs scored that should really be stressed. While the efficiency of the offense is important...the quality of the defense you are facing plays into this as well. I know this is obvious...but I just felt the need to rant on an off-season topic...so, there it is.
So...how do you see your team shaking out Red Zone scoring this season? For my school, I believe Tennessee will be significantly better than 2023, but will not approach the efficiency they had in 2022.

I call that the Joe Milton effect. Expect us to be back at number one overall red zone scoring offense this year with Nico leading the charge. He wasn't denied once against Iowa's top 5 defense when inside the 20.

LSU should still be pretty high, but won’t match last year without Daniels’ dual threat abilities

I think Milton was a critical part...but I also think that some of that could be the transition from Alex Golesh to Joey Halzle as OC. Milton didn't do him any favors, but I think UT's offense sputtered in a lot of areas last year. I look for them to be better, but I also expect there to be some growing pains.

I don't think Iowa's defense was at all prepared for Nico's mobility. I'm curious to see what he is able to do with Bru McCoy back. I will be really interested to see how SEC Red Zone numbers fall out across the board with the addition of Texas and Oklahoma as well.

Joe Milton has looked better than Hendon Hooker so far in camp.

Yeah...he looked better in Fall Camp leading up to the 2021 season...which is why he started the season as QB1. Milton is a very good practice QB...Hooker is a gamer.

Who is the back up to NICO? Because after Tenn gets their arse kicked the first time you will be saying how your back up is the best since Peyton Manning

Right now, it's probably Jake Merklinger (another Freshman, but one who has actually been through Spring Practice). He should be a familiar name to Georgia fans. Another option would be Gaston Moore (RS-SR).
