I also worry about retaining HS kids at Ole Miss.
Quinshon Judkins was a traditional HS recruit.
But you can argue that you got your money's worth out of him before he left. The truth is that you need a balance of both HS recruits and transfers. Lane has never been known as an ace recruiter. He's hired some assistants who are over the years, but not Lane himself. I think he still envisions himself as more of an NFL coach, and has married himself to what he views as more of an NFL model. In theory though, if you have enough NIL to pay for kids out of the portal, you have enough to pay for high school recruits.

In year 3 of the portal era, Kiffin has gone 8-5, 11-2, and 9-3. Last year he would've been in the playoffs. This year Ole Miss was one win away. Ole Miss is one of the few teams that didn't make the playoffs that's capable of beating anyone in the playoffs due to the talent level of the front 7.
Furthermore, Lane's strategy isn't to sign a bunch of 1 year guys. Lane tries to portal in guys with multiple years of eligibility. This year's core was a bunch of guys in year 2 or 3 at Ole Miss. He supplemented this year with more one year guys than usual because he was taking a shot. I suspect next year, Ole Miss will be more of an 8-4 team due the sheer amount we are replacing but he's setting up for a strong 2026 run.

Lane's HS strategy is to get impact players without overpaying them and saving the majority of the NIL for players who are proven at the college level.

I’m enjoying being in the conversation at least….idiots like the Texas clown has no idea how difficult it is to get things done at a place like Ole Miss. Small, poor state with another SEC program right down the road. MSU and OM has challenges that other schools can’t even begin to comprehend. It’s amazing they’ve done as well as they have over the years.

Didn’t you sign Ewers from portal?

When taking the advice of the AU Klan about how to manage your program, then you may have gone the long way around the barn.

God I can’t wait for these fricking homos to play a real SEC schedule and have a season like OU just had. Such an insufferable fan base.

I don’t think that’ll ever work. Loading up on the cream of the portal cycle. Yeah they’ll get up for a big game or two, but those rosters won’t win a championship. The teams who do it right are currently in the playoff. They have a record of developing their recruited high school talent and then supplementing needs in the portal with guys who fit their scheme and culture. Texas hasn’t signed any “can’t miss portal player” unless there was a previous connection to the staff or the program.
We will see.
You know what's not really working at all? Paying some kid big money straight out of highschool to while he spends 1 or 2 years on the bench and then transfers out to some team like Ole Miss.
I know Arch isn't all about the money, but imagine for a second he was and you had spent a pretty penny on him for the last 2 years. And then suddenly he decides to transfer to another school. The people who paid him just get screwed, your team gets screwed because you also spent 2 years "developing" him to whatever degree they accepted the coaching when it could have been someone else - and guess what, you're also likely forced to go to the portal and continue the madness to replace them.
That's the shite that's not going to work.
Saban retired because kids don't want to be developed anymore because they no longer need to be developed to get paid good money.
I think the sweet spot might be those hungry 4 stars who want to be developed and will put in the work. But guess what, if they are suddenly a superstar in their 3rd year....off to some other school for a paycheck they go.
When the NFL starts picking up teams with mostly rookies, I'll change my mind. Free agency can only be fixed by rule and the NCAA lacks the anti-trust exemption status to do it.

I think theyre trying to build a team that's set to win now, as opposed to develop players. This tells me Kiffin won't be at Ole miss any longer.

All things are certainly equal. OP might be onto something.

Meanwhile he’s on his 6th season at Ole Miss and will 100% be back for a 7th. And he’s the 3rd longest tenured head coach in the SEC.

The model worked perfectly this year. We have the personnel. It was the coaching that led to the losses. Period.

I think there's some percentage of transfers on a roster that limit the team's ceiling, but I don't think Ole Miss is over that threshold.
The thing that holds Ole Miss back is the head coach. Ironically, he's the reason they're in the conversation at all. It's fricking difficult to be elite.

Excuses. OP said portal only to fill minor spots yet the most important spot was a portal ads. Its no big deal to admit it, all teams add FA’s nowadays. But tx in here acting like they don’t use or need portal is lies. If you were just honest no one would care. But your biggest piece came from portal lol

This is silly. Sark got to Texas at a time where the best QB on the roster was Casey Thompson. The same guy who couldn't get on the field for Oklahoma this season. The second best QB, Hudson Card, led Purdue to a single B1G win this season.
It was absolutely imperative that he bring in a transfer QB. You're acting like Texas is Oregon, bringing in a new transfer QB every season.
