Thought it made sense to do a optimistic / likely/ pessimistic chart
Too many teams are returning young talent + adding talent to really make a determination
I don't think anyone other than LSU/MSU is "likely" to end up 11-14. There will be someone who has a rough season though

Not bad, but basketball usually has a lot more turmoil on rosters than other sports so it's likely too early to put a good gauge on next year. There will be a lot of transfers, grad transfers, dumb turning pro moves, etc, between now and November especially if a couple coaches get canned which I fully expect.

UAB only began athletics in 1978 and made the elite 8 by 1982.
32 winning seasons in 37 years of basketball.
If UAB was playing in a bigger conference like Bama they'd have far more tournament appearances. It's harder for them to make the tournament than it is Bama, so their achievements are more impressive. Last year they went 26-7 and 16-2 in CUSA and only made the NIT, you think an SEC team gets left out with that record? It's like you're trying to compare your BCS appearances to Boise State's when it's not the same thing.
Besides, the majority of your programs postseason success comes from the 80's when Bama was cheating it's arse off under Wimp Sanderson, which was spurred on because you felt threatened by UAB. Take away that wild west Era and Bama is on part with Auburn and well below UAB

I think this is a good assessment. Also, we don't know if any big grad transfers will come in yet. I don't think Florida would be quite as good this year without Canyon Berry.

Yea, I think between 4-7 is probably the sweet spot.
Our biggest challenge is having a positive non-conference schedule. We need to beat good teams again. Next year will be the first year we have the horses to expect to win some of these big games.
But, like I said, the expectation is the NCAA Tournament. Anything less than that is a disappointment.

I am most interested to see how AU, Bama, and MSU progress next season. All three should take a jump, especially Auburn. AU losses it's backup PG and Dunas and returns everyone else. Dunas caused some matchup problems for teams but was inconsistent. We then return everyone else and should be able to score on most anyone. The question will be if we can defend at all and protect huge leads. AU should probably be sitting at 22-9 instead of 18-13.
AU is also bringing in two top 50 players and will replace Dunas with Deshaun Murray who will be a junior. Averaged 21 PPG and 8 RB a game at Presbyterian. Like I said, points should come easily but Pearl has got to get something from his defense.
Bama seems to be in a similar situation except they have got to get some offense to go along with their Defense. I actually think they will stay about the same (anywhere from 5 to 9) due to shear number of freshman coming in.
State gets any play from the big guys they will be really though. There gaurd play is very impressive.

Bookmarked for the sweet taste of disappointment in a year

That's why I gave a pretty broad range for all the teams If we are talking about '17-18, you just have to accept we are really far away and likely it all is BS discussion

Barry has been great for them, but he is very replaceable. Given they bring in 3 top 100 recruits, they return nearly everyone and White seems legit as a coach, shouldn't worry about next year
Unless some idiot turns pro

I think we should have a "potential idiots that turn pro" thread or list. For us, there was talk of Dozier turning pro when he was playing well early on as he came in with huge expectations being McDonals all american. He has the potential to make dumb move by going pro. He's nowhere near ready.
I could see some Arkansas JUCO guys maybe doing so because you never know about JUCO's in general and how they're adapting at an actual university grade-wise and Weatherspoon from MSU making poor decisions too.

Yeah I agree about Barry. I'm just using him as an example of a grad transfer that made a big difference.

It's the expectation, no excuses

I think this drives a ton of the "turn pro early" decisions.

8 sweet 16 appearances is a lot better than 8 total NCAAT appearances
Meaningless when you've still only advanced past the Sweet 16 the same number of times as Auburn.
Posted on 3/6/17 at 8:37 pm to coachcrisp
So why don't you go ahead and explain to the class exactly what Bama has accomplished that Auburn hasn't with all those extra chances?
That's right, Jack shite.
At least we make the Sweet 16 half the times we make the tournament

Ok, I'm confused now. I thought you just said making it to the Sweet 16 didn't matter?
Posted on 3/6/17 at 9:01 pm to volfan30
And he wonders why his statement is so stupid.

You state that number of Sweet Sixteen appearances is irrelevant, then you make this statement:
"At least we make the Sweet 16 half the times we make the tournament"
...and you wonder why your statement is stupid!
