Knee pads? When did players quit wearing them?

Does it make them faster?
Are there no blows to the knee anymore?
Does it look cool to not wear standard knee pads?
I could see kickers and punters gaining some functional advantage, but it looks like many players are just forgoing the old style knee pads.

With the new rules disallowing hitting below the knees this encourages no pads. Knee pads provide zero protection from a helmet shot.

We are all waiting for the obvious joke here.....

I'm sure it makes them faster. I took enough helmets to the knee by much smaller dudes though that it still boggles my mind that a RB would pass on them

Even with them, I remember a kickoff where I got a helmet to the knee and it swelled up to twice its normal size.

Had to go to a HS game last week, first one in probably 20yrs.... and the ref addressed it to some receivers a few times.

While this is true of a hard shot, you also can connect with all kinds of hard things on the field including helmets. They provide some protection. As for when, the 1st player I remember not wearing them was Marcus Allen.

The game is moving towards flag football anyway.

Lots of the equipment from 30+ years ago has either disappeared or gotten smaller (shoulder pads)
Nobody wears neck braces, hip pads and arm/elbow pads.Im assuming it all has to do with mobility or some of those pads provided little protection to begin with.

I feel like I never even see player wearing thigh pads anymore either.
ETA: I also totally forgot about hip pads too. I think most players just don’t wear lower body pads of any kind.

And jerseys no longer have sleeves and a lineman that would wear a size 60 jersey looks like they wear a 42 now. I don't know how in the hell they move. Also, the pants look like shorts now even though the rulebook STILL states that the pants must cover the knee. If the bottom of your pants are at mid thigh I guess there is no reason for knee pads since thigh pads are there.

What a minute, did Aggies quit wearing them?
We sure about that?

IDK but pads are also sewn into the pants. No more hip pads riding up being a PITA

I would extend the pants length without the pads. Carpet burns hurt like hell.

Man, I forgot all about the neck brace. Seems like all LBs used to wear those.

Football knee pads don’t really do that much. They protect you against bruising and injuries to the kneecap from direct contact, but they do next to nothing to prevent most serious knee injuries.
As a result, many players feel the increased comfort and freedom of movement is a worthwhile trade off. This has been a trend for several years. The players are technically still required to wear them but they’ll get around it by wearing shorter pants and using smaller knee pads - to the point that it sits above the knee.
The same thing has been happening in the NFL as well.

RB's wore them as well.I tried wearing one in HS and it seemed rather useless.
Seems like everyone else figured it out as well.

If you have a chance to slip on a modern jersey, try it.
It's tighter even without pads, and the arms are fitted pretty snug around the top of the biceps.
Really weird feeling, IMO.

Players didn’t want to resemble Aggie yell leaders so they’ve ditched the knee pads.
