I've been curious since attending the Auburn-LSU game last month. What is the history behind using this somewhat pedestrian American folk tune as a primary fight song?

You sure you aren't talking about "Glory, Glory" instead?
I've been working on the railroad is Texas.

I often wonder how confusing it must be when they play each other.

I'm sure if you go take a piss at a UGA/AU game and "Glory, Glory" cranks up there is probably a lot of confusion.

The eyes of Texas are upon you,
All the live long day.
The eyes of Texas are upon you,
You cannot get away.
Do not think you can escape them,
At night, or early in the morn'.
The eyes of Texas are upon you,
Till Gabriel blows his horn!

Wait,that's "Leroy Brown".

It appears that a stalker wrote the Texas fight song.

FWIW
Neck is awesome. Maybe not original, but none do it better than the Golden Band.

I was a student at LSU in the 60s when they (whoever they are) introducted Hey Fighting Tigers. Used the tune from Hey Look Me Over, out of a half-arse Broadway musical, Wildcat, staring an aging Lucille Ball.
I guess we all get fight songs wherever we can.

I have often wondered why Georgia adopted a song that General Sherman's troops played while burning half of Georgia to the ground during Sherman's march to the sea.

Except Grambling State and Southern? Yeah, "Neck" isn't at all original, but who cares? I wish the MDB would choose a song that a traditionally black band plays to pump up the crowd rather than "Basketcase."
The MDB is just sad now. Technically speaking, it's one of the 5 or 6 best bands in the country, but the corny song choices ("Viva la Vida," "Redneck Woman," etc.) have prevented crowd involvement like LSU's band gets.
I do like the third down cheer from Les Miserables, though. It sounds pretty cool.

Yeah I just meant in general. No one does Neck like the Jukebox. None of us hold a candle to the traditional black colleges.
