It was destined to fly apart when coaches and admins started taking millions annually some 20-30 years ago, and they used the NCAA to keep making the football players “amateurs” so that they did not have to pay them what they were worth. The selfishness we are seeing now from some players and families is nothing compared to the greed and stupidity of the NCAA/coaches/admins.

It will be interesting to see how cases like this Iamaleava situation play out. If he ends up playing for less than he was getting at Tennessee that will be a good thing. Let the free market cause the corrections, no government intervention, then things will settle out in a few years.

These are the types of dumbasses that are ruining society. People like this have no concept of value and are full of entitlement.

Nothing says free market like government intervention. fricking dumbass.

This thread is ridiculous. This sounds like a post from 50 years ago or 20 years ago.

Listen, very few stadiums are packed in college football these days and it’s been that way for 50 years. For every Tennessee or Penn State that has 90+ thousand there are 4 that don’t. And you know why? Because the sport has never enforced rules or fairness. It’s always been a free for all where the top 20 programs buy every top tier player and then the other 90 teams get the scraps.

So, yes, this thread is correct that many fan bases will shrink because they won’t dominate as much. 11 win teams will become 9 win teams. 9 win teams will become 7 win teams. And teams that have been 7 win teams will spend to become 9/10 win teams.

So, no one feels sorry for any program that loses players to the portal or recruits due to NIL. If that means your fanbase shrinks welcome to the what everyone else has been dealing with. Everyone saw the stark contrast in Bama’s spring game attendance. Meanwhile, most other teams outside the top 20 had the usual number.

It all comes down to perspective and you guys don’t have that because you’ve been living the high life with your large fanbases and under the table recruiting. Now that everyone can buy players and players aren’t trapped for 4 years you think the world is coming to an end. It’s not at all. Most fanbases love this new era where they get multiple shots at recruiting players.

None of what you are saying is actually true. Once again you come here posting fantasies that are devoid of reality.

Alabama didn't even have a spring game this year is the reason why the numbers were lower. It was a stupid open practice that nobody gives a shite about.

Meanwhile, GT recently lost one of the best players they've had in awhile to Alabama.

In the end, the rich get richer.

@Runningjacket

You are wrong on little programs liking it. The 25 to 50 is programs maybe but the rest no. You think 40 years ago Brett Farve would have stayed at Southern Miss or would he have bolted to Bama OSU or the like?

You think FAU basketball liked loosing all 5 of the final 4 2024 team starters to the portal? If so you are insane. They all wanted the money and FAU could not match.

It didn’t have to change. It was the “the kids deserve to be paid” crowd. They got paid a lot - tuition, room and board, clothes, tutoring, etc.

It doesn’t matter what you think is a lot. The players are able to declare what they want and programs will either pay it or not. Since winning and high level play are very important to these entertainment entities, they will get paid.

Wouldn't be the Rant if we didn't have a thread of hyperbolic boomers complaining about how sports are dead.

It’s simply overreaction by fans. 95% of the team works their arse off and loves the school they play for. You just choose to look at the outliers and put that on every college football player.

Whether you like it or not we are a nation of laws. Without laws NIL never would exist. So now that you admit we don’t need to regulate free markets we can just go back to how things were before NIL.

While the focus is on D1 schools, the rea tragedy is going to come to smaller schools.

D2 Limestone (SC) will probably close at end of academic year

Limestone has a robust D2 athletics program.

I’d cancel the 2025 football season for this every weekend on campus.

They just dont have loyalty to the programs

Whether it’s a school, a job, or the dating market, people are usually only as loyal as their options. Not too many people are going to sacrifice what is best for themselves.

If schools are so big on loyalty, why recruit a QB out of California? Why not a QB from Tennessee? Why recruit a mercenary from the other side of the country and then whine when he acts like a mercenary?

You could have a 5th year senior QB from Knoxville who grew up with Tennessee and Peyton Manning shite all over his room. He went to every football camp. He went to a bunch of games. He’s a solid QB but not championship caliber. Worked his arse off in the program, including scout team duty early on. But if the program finds someone a little better who might win another game or two, his arse is going to the bench.

Fans are loyal to winning, and players and coaches are loyal to money and opportunity. If you expect anything else, you’re deluding yourself.

You can’t blame the ncaa. U have to blame the fans and the schools. If schools would stop tampering or offering these kids that amount of money it would stop. If all schools would say, “hey we are not paying you guys to come play. And every school stick to it then it can be about development and the love of the school/coach. But if each school keep bidding for players, then it will continue.

In a perfect world, your scenario would make sense, but colleges have been bidding on the top players for many, many years and that's never going to change, with or without the transfer portal and NIL! The courts have also ruled in favor of the players getting paid, so the NCAA doesn't have a leg to stand on and the transfer portal and NIL has gotten so out of control, it virtually impossible to stop it at this point.

Wrong.
College football has never been more popular. It's not going anywhere in spite of how fans of old school "amateur" cfb feel about it.

Literally the only thing that has changed is the fact the traditional powers who paid players now have competition from those who shied away from playing in the mud in the past. That's it.

Never said it wasn't popular, but the reality is all good things eventually come to an end. NIL/TP will eventually run fans away because when there is no loyalty by the players, fan interest will also wane.
