DeBoer will be fine. He’s no Saban though

The weird thing: Alabama is rated as slightly better this year in opponent adjusted metrics.

Despite Alabama making the playoffs last year, they were ranked 9th in FEI and 7th in F+.

This year they are ranked 8th in FEI and still 7th in F+. Moving up from a 1.04 rating in 23 to a 1.08 rating this year.

Alabama making the playoffs last year might have been one of Saban's best coaching jobs.

Neither is anyone else.

Smart is on a trajectory to get there though. Question there will be how does NIL and the portal affect them. You can already see cracks in the foundation forming.

Smart is in hot water IMO. May just be having Beck but they’re not what they once were.

Vince Dooley's 1st year(1964) coaching record was 7-3-1

In this day and age, you are on the hot seat immediately for having those records.

Heck, if you look at Dooley's career at Georgia, he only won one National Championship and had 17 out of 25 seasons with 3 losses or more. It took him 17 seasons to win that natty.

But that was a different time. These days, patience to allow a coach to form and shape a team into a contender doesn't exist.

And in this new age of NIL? Lord, you let a coach go and you'll lose half your team to the transfer portal.

The powers that be need to somehow bring contracts into the picture so that a player is locked into a roster for 3 or 4 years.

What's happening now is lunacy

I don't think anybody expected him to be Saban. DeBoer has won a ton of games. He didn't do that by accident. He knows what he's doing. This season basically boiled down to inconsistent qb play. He was not able to run his full offense due to the qb. I don't think Milroe can be helped.

Nah, lukewarm at best. They definitely aren’t whipping people in the trenches like we have seen.

The interior lines is where the portal is going to cut into top teams depth.

True. However, Bryant won more games in his first year than the program had won in the previous three seasons combined.

He then proceeded to go 7-2-2 his second year, 8-1-2 his third, and then won his first national championship in year number four.

Amazing how someone can inherit the remnants of a team that was a dick hair away from being upset by South Florida, Arkansas and Auburn and win nine games... with a full retard at QB to boot.

Dark days ahead for future foes not named Vandy and Oklahoma.

Assuming CKD will find a QB that can run his whole playbook, we'll be fine. I know a lot of folks think the OL was also a problem, but I think it was more the unpredictability of Milroe that made them look inconsistent. There are numerous examples where it looks like Milroe and the other 10 are running different plays.

Assuming we win a bowl or 1st round CFP game, 10 wins first year isn't too shabby.

The season has been more disappointing to me in terms of how undisciplined and disconnected the team has appeared at times. The wins total is respectable by any metric especially with the inconsistent QB play. The defense gave up yards in several games but didn't give up a ton of points. So there is reason for optimism going into next season assuming Milroe declares.

How many of those took over a program from Nick Saban after having 6 straight years of #1 or #2 recruiting classes?

Smart is an excellent coach, but he will never make Saban's level.

NIL era.

Players went from wanting to be developed to wanting to get paid.

Everyone has to deal with it.

Bama has had to experience a total staff turnover (including HC) in 17 years. Some are more successful than others (9-3 is far from bad) but every single new staff has issues to overcome.

DeBoer may have brought a player or two from Washington with him (no idea, most coaches do) but the current Bama squad is NOT his team, yet he still managed to have a winning record and be on the cusp of the playoffs. Consider Sark's first year at Texas was a near disaster...yet he was able to eventually win over players he didn't recruit and recruit the players he needed to replace those who refused to get onboard.

DeBoer will be fine, just revisit this is 3 years and see if I'm right or wrong.

Smart is not Saban. Not now, not in 15 years, not ever.
