Explain the Pom Poms at SEC games

I love the SEC but never have quite understood the pom poms. They do not make noise! Do not get it.
I have travelled to Ole Miss, Auburn and headed to Alabama. I have seen grown men walking around campus with pom poms tucked in the back of their hat, in their belt, in their boots etc. I have been to many LSU games and do not recall pom poms there.
While I am at it, I do not think I have seen baton twirlers in any other conference either. Auburn must have had 25 baton twirlers and someone told me they are all on scholarship. Baton twirling scholarships?
Trying to learn and fit in but drawing the line at pom poms.

Youre still allowed to make noise with one. As much as you don't understand them I don't understand folks who point out the obvious that they don't make noise. Should we all get cow bells?

pom pom's at lsu maybe passed out 4 times in last 10 years. Auburn is pom pom nation. some like it, some don't. don't feel like you HAVE to fit in, do what you want.

I like all the odd shite that makes college fan bases different. Even the cowbells. God help me, even Wooo Pig Sowie. It's what makes it fun in part.

I made a similar comment to my wife about MSU, something to the effect of "what kind of pussies need cowbells to make noise?"
Her immediate reply was "Kinda reminds me of the A&M towels".

Yup they're shakers.
They hand them out to the lower student sections. They look good when all the students shake them in unison.

Did like those Bama gals at the LSU game they kept showing. Looked like about 30 or more in uniform sitting/standing on one row across doing cheers together.
