Expansion: Biggest CFB Fanbases

Not my preferences or opinions, just conclusions drawn from the facts:
-ND is the biggest fish available, followed by Oregon (assuming dissolution of the PAC 12)
-Super conferences (2, maybe 3) make the most sense in terms of TV viewership (money), as 75% of college football fans root for the top 35 teams
-SEC is fine at 16 teams. We should really only expand if it makes each teams piece of the pie bigger. It doesn’t matter how much recent success that team has had. Brand and amount of eyes matter most.

What do any of those graphics mean? I can’t see shite.

Market-wise, is Oregon really that valuable? I have to believe UNC would be a bigger draw.

Yeah... I'm going to have to cast strong doubt on Syracuse having a larger fanbase (football, no less!) than all but five SEC teams.
Oregon having more fans than its state's population, in spite of their Nike uniform appeal and resulting popularity with youth, is also pretty ridiculous. It'd be believable if they were in the midst of an Alabama-esque dynasty, but sidewalk fans in Missouri and New Hampshire aren't gravitating towards the Ducks en masse.

I don’t think so. Oregon has Nike powering it first and foremost. I don’t think the Oregon fan who happens to be at shirt fan would stand by the team during lean years.
They may be overinflated

Biggest takeaway is that the top 16 fanbases account for 50% of all CFB fans; and the top 35 fanbases account for 75% of all CFB fans.
The SEC has half of those top 16 (incl. Texas). And the SEC has the highest average fan base size.

With that tiny (by SEC standards) stadium they are probably overinflated.

Interesting info, especially 50% of fans follow just 16 teams, 75% of fans follow the top 30, and 90% of fans are for the top 61 teams.
Most of the info is believable, but I don't think there is any way Syracuse has that many fans.

I think the amount of fans teams put in a stadium is just one piece of the puzzle that make up the size of a “fanbase”. I think you also have to look at the amount of “t-shirt fans” that just buy stuff because they think it’s cool. They may or may not have any affiliation with the university or ever been in that state.
For instance, Texas A&M averages Top 5 in attendance numbers and has a big brand in the state of Texas. However, there aren’t a ton of people buying A&M gear outside of Texas unless they have some affiliation.
Oregon has Nike and the gimmicky uniforms. Pair that with the explosive offenses and recent success and there are all of a sudden Oregon “fans” everywhere.
Same thing with USC. People in LA could care less to go to a USC game if they aren’t good, especially now that the Rams and Chargers are in town and doing well. However, they do draw a lot of eyes on TV and sell a lot of gear.

THis is based on ticket sales

Not exactly the best methodology. The only other study similar to this used Facebook likes which again, is bad because its only studying people on Facebook and a college athletic dept that has a good Facebook page is going to get more likes.
There are telephone studies similar to political polls that have been done in some states which are probably as accurate as you can get but we only have data from some states not all of them.

I read every word of that, and found it very interesting. The most interesting thing of all is that the SEC team with the largest percentage of non-graduate fans is... the Auburn Tigers. Yes, that's right, the very same Auburn Tigers who love to denigrate the Bama fanbase for having no connection to the school, while trumpeting how Auburn fans are mostly graduates who have some deep, spiritual connection to the place. Very interesting indeed!

I think there's some Big Ten bias in there...but the fact Va Tech has that many more fans than Virginia is interesting from an expansion standpoint.

It isn't quite as unbelievable when you consider that New York is one of the most populous states, and Syracuse is the closest thing that it has to a school that would be the "state school" in college athletics.

Dook basketball "fans"
Most of Dook's TV ratings are fans of other teams watching to see Dook lose. Notre Dame football has a similar "anti fan" following that affects TV ratings. If you see live CBB you want to see Dook (instead of say IU, KU, or UNC) in a bracket as it will be cheaper and easier to snag tickets.
4 teams scalpers love
UK
UNC
KU
IU (even as down as they have been)

Without getting too much into what constitutes a fan for the purposes of this analysis (are you a fan if you can't name a team's head coach and starting quarterback, which I would say is true for a lot of people of varying allegiances in NYC), NYC is four hours away from Syracuse and the MSA anchored by Syracuse has a population of 660k (not to mention neighboring Rochester's MSA, boasting a population of over one million).
I just find it really hard to believe that Syracuse can be considered to have one of the sixteen largest football fanbases yet find themselves unable to sell out a 49k seat stadium (frequently having attendance figures below 35,000 and even delving into the high 20k range) in spite of its huge population advantages.

Not sure if other sports factor into the data (considering Georgetown was in one of the graphics) but they used to fill the Carrier Dome for Syracuse when Jim Boehiem was there. Folks forget the Big East (and basketball) was the first driver of modern TV contracts.
Syracuse football was big in the 50's and 60's and basketball later on probably adds "crossover" Syracuse fans for both sports

Yeah there is no way Mizzou has a larger fanbase than Arkansas. Somehow their data is flawed so who knows what else is messed up in there.

I'm not defending his methodology, and for all I know his information could be wrong. But, I don't find it beyond the realm of possibility that some decent percentage of New Yorkers would identify themselves as Syracuse fans, even if that fandom is much, much more tepid than your average SEC or B1G fan. The one upstate New Yorker I knew when I was in the Navy was a Syracuse fan, despite having no connection to the school.
