East Alabama Male College (how gay is that?) opens its doors in 1856 in Auburn, Alabama...

...then, it becomes the Agricultural & Mechanical College of Alabama in 1872, then morphs into Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1899, then they got sick of that and finally changed its name to Auburn University in 1960.
In contrast, the University of Georgia was established and chartered in 1785 to become the first state-chartered university in the United States of America.
Did you know......
"Glory, glory to Ole Auburn" spirit song began being played by the Auburn Marching Band in the early 1950's.
-- Georgia adopted the song from "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" when it was specially arranged for The Redcoat Band (UGA) by Dept. of Music chairman, Hugh Hodgson, in 1915. It is Georgia's de-facto fight song, but officially it's our spirit song.
Auburn's official fight song, "War Eagle", did not become Auburn's fight song until 1954 when Auburn supporter Roy Sewell thought the current fight song, "Auburn Victory March", was old and outdated. So, he commissioned two NY songwriters to come up with something and they did. "War Eagle" was born and I must say, they have a really good sounding fight song (I can only imagine what "Auburn Victory March" sounded like).
-- Georgia's official fight song is, "Hail To Georgia", played after every PAT.
Auburn installed hedges around its football field at Jordan-Hare Stadium in 1987.
-- Georgia built Sanford Stadium in 1929 and had English Privet Hedges installed around the football field when it opened.
NOTICE A TREND HERE SO FAR?....
The hallmark of the Georgia-Auburn rivalry is the interconnection between the two schools.
-- Georgia Athletic Director, Joel Eaves (1964-1979) was a former Auburn alumnus and head basketball coach of Auburn. He is Auburn's winningest basketball coach ever.
-- Georgia football HC and former UGA Athletic Director, Vince Dooley, graduated from Auburn and was a former assistant at Auburn.
-- Ralph "Shug" Jordan (of JH Stadium) had previously been an assistant football coach and head basketball coach at UGA. One of Jordan’s graduate assistants on the sidelines for the 1959 UGA-Auburn game that UGA won to win the SEC title? Vince Dooley.
It goes beyond Dooley, Dye and Jordan, though.....
Hugh Nall – played at Georgia 1976-1980, coached at Auburn 1999-2008
Neil Callaway – coached at Auburn 1981-1992, coached at UGA 2001-2006
Stacy Searels – played at Auburn 1984-1987, coached at UGA 2007-2010
Rodney Garner – played at Auburn 1985-1988, coached at UGA 1998-2012, coached at Auburn 2013-2020
Will Muschamp – played at UGA 1991-1994, coached at Auburn 2006-2007, 2015, coached at UGA 2021
Mike Bobo – played at UGA 1993-1997, coached at UGA 2001-2014, coached at Auburn 2021
Tracy Rocker – played at Auburn 1986-1989, coached at Auburn 2009-2010, coached at UGA 2014-2016
When you throw in the infamous firehose debacle, the blackout, the games of revenge, the number of upsets the games have produced (but NOT THIS WEEK!), the Georgia-Auburn rivalry is truly one of the most colorful and storied in all of college football.
And....to think that two graduate students at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland -- Mr. Charles Herty (UGA graduate) of Millegeville, Georgia & Mr. George Petrie (Auburn graduate) of Montgomery, Alabama -- met way back in 1889 and personally launched this rivalry that began in 1892.
The rest is history so..........

Georgia playing the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” shows what a bunch of yankee trash they are in Athens.

Bro, do you even do history?
Most colleges 100 years ago and follow a similar pattern.
UK was originally private
All male
Became an A&M
Became a state school
Admitted women
Water is wet BTYW.

Most schools didn't allow women to my knowledge.

otherwise known as weeds or brush. Yea,we know "the hedges" are a thing at Georgia. But bragging about privet would be like celebrating having endzone lined with crabgrass.

Battle Hymn of the Republic is a great American song sung by my Illinois ancestors when they helped to stamp out a slaveholder’s rebellion. Do you hate America?
Also Auburn also plays that song.
Also Auburn also plays that song.

Why do they always play “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” at Georgia games?

If you go back far enough in time in the south, no matter the official name of the university, they school and the sports teams were typically referred to by the name of the town where the institution was located - Auburn, Athens, Tuscaloosa.
I don't know if it is still there, or on display, but in the early 90s, the Bryant Museum at UA had a ticket from either the 1895 or 1901 Iron Bowl (at the time the only two times it was played in Tuscaloosa) and the ticket actually lists the game as Auburn vs Tuscaloosa.

Same as Georgia not being able to come up with their on logo, so they take Greenbay’s.

That's the only thing I will miss about Gus. He drew up the perfect play and Marshall executed it with precision!
