That team went 0–18 in the conference last year and they might be the hottest team in basketball not named Auburn right now.

100% agree. If he finishes the season strong, he should certainly be looked at for SEC COY.
Just ask the Mississippi State boys:

There were several really great GIF/Meme opportunities from the MS State fanbase during the second half of that one

Grill is having one of the best 3 point shooting seasons in SEC history. Lot of season left, but his 3 point % on the year is currently good for 2nd best single season % in conference history, behind Travis Ford in 1992.

Far cry from Cuonzo Martin who's currently 0-8 in conference at Mizzou state.

Having to watch Martin coach is a fate worse than living in Kansas.

Mizzou was really impressive and Gates deserves huge props.
State is starting to freefall a little. 2-5 in the last 7 and the two wins were in OT. They need this open midweek badly.

he was/is awful. I live in Knoxville and they hated him.
Martin was beyond awful. He was stealing from Mizzou for years.

Cuonzo won today, it’s been painful to watch but he’s 1-11 in conference now ??

Last year, Gates had several key injuries and was playing with a make-shift team. Not finding excuses for last year, but that is what we were told and I guess, judging from this year, I guess it was true.

I think the bigger factor might have been the turmoil in the athletic department and his wife’s best friend getting run out of town on a rail after a year of backstabbing in the department. I think it affected him and his whole staff’s approach to games, preparation time, attitude, etc.
