quote:Not taking anything away from AP but Dupree reportedly was 6'3" 230 lbs ran a sub 10s 100 m dash and could bench press 400lb 10+ times.
But both were FAR ahead of their time. Imagine Adrian Peterson playing 30 years ago.

I'd take Bo over Dupree. Dupree was too pampered to be the greatest. family and other people got into his head. Bo turned down the Yankees and could of played for years in two pro sports at an elite level if it wasnt for his freak injury.

Any old timers on here remember the class of 82 which produced "The Greatest That Never Was" and "The Greatest of All Time"? Just wanna know what (if anything) that was being said about these kids from Bama and Miss that year?
Dupree was probably the most hyped high school recruit ever up until that time. he was a superstar before he even went to college. There was press on him as a high school star. I don't remember too much about Bo's recruitment. I only remember the first time I watched their game how the announcer's gushed over Bo and Bo delivered.

Obviously Bo ended up being the best, but you can't help but wonder what would have happened if Marcus would have either stayed at OU
Marcus was messed up in the head. But if he would have stayed at OU, he would easily been a heisman winner and broke many records. However, if he would have went straight to USM instead of OU, He would have played 3 years and broke many records and probably won a heisman.
quote:
or went somewhere like Ole Miss, Bama etc... and played out his career
He would have never played there. Was never interested in those two. It was OU or Southern Miss or a Texas longshot.
I just remember as a kid him being a flake more than anything. He never had a work ethis that would have allowed him to be the greatest. The only time he worked hard was when he made a comeback as a Ram but he wasn't the same Marcus Dupree.
Also remembering his signing day as a New Orleans Breaker. But I think Buford Jordan was a better RB. Of course, Dupree was always injured b/c he didn't take what he did seriously.

Sadly, and for obviously different reasons, both are stories of unrealized potential.
To answer the question: Bo over Marcus.

Bo was a major recruit, especially here in Alabama.
Marcus was the better natural running back though, , better lateral movement. I'd compare Bo to a much bigger Chris Johnson, a guy who was going to kill you in a straight line but who was not as good in traffic.

I think Bo Jackson is overrated.
Possibly the best pure athlete of the modern era of football, but he's not the GOAT running back. Even at the college level.

For a good read, check out "The Courting of Marcus Dupree", by Willie Morris. Dupree's recruitment is the stuff of legends.

Bo Jackson's greatness has been overblown somewhat. The kid was undoubtedly a freak but his is a story of unlimited potential being brought to an end by an injury. He was a freak athlete, probably the best athlete the state of Alabama has ever put out, but many people confuse what he did do with what he was capable of doing.

I give the nod to Dupree over Bo... He allowed his Soul to Glo and was oh so silky smooth... Bo , on the other hand, did not.

I think a lot of people are not taking into consideration the two schools each went to at the time. OK was a powerhouse the day Dupree stepped onto campus. When Bo first got to Auburn they were still in the initial stages of Pat Dye's player investments.

If Marcus would've handeled his recruitment responsibly and went to a team who truly loved he would've been the GOAT no doubt.

Just found this thread while re-watching the Dupree 30 for 30. Dupree was a beast but Bo is the best athlete that has ever walked this earth.
Lot of bitter Bama fans on here. I'm a Bama fan..... But "real" recognize "real".

Dupree didn't even train or practice correctly or all the time. He wasn't even in shape half the time.
Neither did Bo. Widely known that he didn't lift weights or do any condition in practice. He got in fights with the RB coach all the time.
That said, I still think it is close to call and probably would give it to Dupree.
Dupree was a better RB than Bo in my opinion. He probably would have been the best RB of all time. I think Bo got by on athleticism not on RB skills
Athletically I give it to Bo but only slightly at best. Almost a wash.
