How about ticket sales and such? Is that included?

I'm guessing the home stadiums have something to do with it.

Well if you win the first game you’re going to get a way bigger pay out in addition to that first game when you play the neutral site game. Then if you win again, you get an even bigger payout added on top of those first two.

The first game of the playoffs is essentially a bowl game...?

How is that the case?

Big name schools pay cupcakes a couple of million these days to play a home only game. I imagine UGA makes ten times that for a home game. If we had a home playoff game, maybe the road team would get 4 million... but the home team would have to pocket a lot more. If it were split evenly for a big name home school I'd expect at least 10 million a team.

I maybe wrong but I think each 1st round playoff team gets $3 million in addition to the $4 million for travel costs.

What about cuts for teams not playing in a bowl game or playoffs? Do they still get a cut?

Visitors also get $3 million check for travel expenses plus SEC teams get to keep the majority of the $4 million and other funds as they advance...$20 million if you advance to the finals.

The home team makes more than double that just hosting the game

Not for the playoffs and rightfully so.

Per the Sports Business Journal:

quote:

The SEC “pays most of its CFP money to the teams that earn it.” For example, Texas received $3M of the $4M it earned the SEC “for making the field.” The remaining money is “split equally among all members of the SEC, including a share for the conference office.”

Right, so that 8 million for the citrus bowl is split 16 ways. That 4 million for the playoffs isn’t. So you’re making more playing in the playoffs than you are playing in the citrus bowl

While the higher-seeded teams in Friday’s and Saturday’s games have a home field advantage over their road opponents, they won’t cash in as much as they normally do, and visiting teams won’t be quite as unwelcome.

That’s because the CFP is organizing the games, creating some unique circumstances:

Ticket sales revenue goes to the CFP. Schools keep parking and concessions sales.

CFP Home Field Ticket Sales goes to CFP, not the host team.

29% of the CFP revenue goes to the SEC and 29% to the Big10. EVERY SEC school benefits from the CFP.

But those payments are just a floor. For this year’s playoff, conferences also receive $4 million for each school that gets into the 12-team field. Conferences receive an additional $4 million if one of their teams makes it to the quarterfinals. They get a $6 million check if one of these teams advances to the semifinals and another $6 million payout if that team advances to the national championship game.

Point being that previous playoff payout were mostly split back to the BCS days and next year will be guaranteed payouts to the conference that will shared among conference members. This years deal is somewhat of a outlier.
