Whether people you know talk about him or not doesn't really make any difference. Bear Bryant is a much more enormous pop culture figure, but that's not the point at all. You understand that, right? Right?

Agreed, the vast majority of college football fans are not in the know.

They probably don't know who Knute Rockne, Walter Camp, or John Heisman (just knowing the last name because of the trophy doesn't count) were either. Doesn't mean they weren't extremely important.

The point is Bear Bryant is the figure of Bama success. That is the point. And yes I am right. Good attempts though, I applaud you for that.

ETA: I never said Wallace wasn't important. I said he isn't considered by the majority when discussing Bama football.

That was your point? I would've never argued that. That's definitely not what diddy and I were arguing.

I thought the argument was that Saban's success wasn't as impressive as Bryant's because Bryant established UA as a championship contender year in and year out, and the fan base/administration wouldn't accept less.

Then bama fans came in saying Alabama was already established before bryant and auburn fans said nuh uh and then people started arguing over Mobile and Birmingham or some shite I dunno. Or was that another thread?

He was talking about Saban. Saban is Alabama's coach. If anyone says anything funny/weird/interesting about Saban, it's going to be discussed.

It was.

This has been proven, sourced, and linked..

Diddy said Bama had an advantage because it was near B'ham. Someone pointed out that Auburn is near the gump. It devolved into a B-ham vs. Gump discussion for awhile.

There's my explanation. The whole thread is retarded. Seriously

anyone who thinks the gump is better than Birmingham is a fricking retard.

I just glanced into the thread, and I am shocked to see 3 x's as many Alabama fans when compared to Auburn fans...

It's a thread about Saban. Blame Pat Dye. He made it about Saban.

Did Dye's daughter ever get out of the looney bin? The apple didn't fall far from that tree if he really believes that.....

Alabama was already an established program before Bryant became its head coach. That's why the administration at the time pretty much made him God of Tuscaloosa straight away. They made him the highest paid college head coach that ever was up to that time and they made him athletic director as well.

Bryant, however, is the symbol of the program. Wallace Wade and Frank Thomas, while their efforts built the foundation that Bryant used to construct the Alabama football program we know and love today, they were here so long ago that no one hardly remembers them. I am willing to wager that, before those statues went up, the average Alabama fan had no idea who they were or whether or not they ever coached at Alabama. The importance of their head coaching tenures, however, cannot be overstated. Hell, if not for Frank Thomas, Bryant would have never come to Tuscaloosa to play football in the first place. So yeah...those two coaches were VERY important in building the tradition that Alabama knows and enjoys today.

There's not a whole lot of difference. B'ham is about 6,500 more. And Monkey Town is the capital. LINK

And Auburn is right off I85 to Montgomery, less than an hour away. LINK

Well, Duke's stadium is named after Wade. I also hate when people discredit what Thomas did for the University. He would have done even better than he did had he not gotten sick.

Do you think they had more of an impact than Bear Bryant did? Serious question, I don't know.
