Transfer portal is far more the culprit. Recruiting rankings are largely the same pre and post NIL. The transfer portal though has caused servicable depth to be much harder to maintian, especially at the biggest impact positions, like QB. Development of players in a system is drastically decreased. So, naturally you are going to get more parity across the country.

Transfer portal did allow other teams capture a Diego or a Cam Ward which helped their team become adequate, but the football factories are going to keep getting them as well. Ohio State took three big time transfers last year.

I am more concerned by the deeper pockets that have nearly insatiable amounts of hunger to buy the best

I agree with his take that UGA is back to its 'normal'.

The 19 year SEC Championship drought from 1983 to 2002 was an anomaly

The big difference under legal pay for play is the scale of the payments. Now that it is above board, alums and fans with big corporate money are involved instead of the boat and car dealers or small business owner class.

Yep. QB was just one example, but similarly with OL/DL and some other skill positions, lots of talent is transfering instead of being a depth piece for 1-2 years. So, teams are having to rely on younger and younger players, unless they get a big time transfer in, like OSU did this year.

I think this will eventually have a reverse impact though. The teams getting these transfers at the moment are benefitting from a lot of these players having developed pre-portal bonanza. Give another 3-4 years and players will be transferring so much, the talent of what is transferring will be much more raw and undeveloped, save a few players each year. Which, will probably end up hurting a lot of the programs that need to rely on it and benefit the teams that are consistently recruiting HS at high levels

Yeah…it was all of that under the table money that hooked us up with Stetson Bennet, Ladd McConkey and Brock Bowers. The bidding was fierce for those guys coming out of college.

Now the playing field has leveled.
That’s why Saban retired.

Recruiting rankings say you are full of shite. Alabama has more talent now than every before.

Not really. Alabama has a very good group of highly ranked players, this is true. However, the portal and NIL has allowed other teams to make big improvements year on year and close the gap in terms of number of highly ranked players on their teams.

In the past Bama had 4 star players sitting on the bench while other 4/5 star players started. They did that because they could not transfer, and because they had hope of playing in the NFL even if they were second string at Alabama. Those days are long gone, and Alabama is having to negotiate a new world where 4 star players are not willing to sit on their bench.

Are you suggesting Alabama has less scholarships now or more 3 stars than previously?

You do realize highly rated players also transfer in to Alabama right? It's not a one way door. I understand as an Auburn fan you like to focus on what you see as negatives and you just see players leaving, but it works both ways.

What's lacking is development. And it's not just an Alabama thing, it's everyone to various degrees. All the little distractions and so on of the past are now magnified greatly. There is more incentive to go have a good time than there is to develop because they are getting paid for talent NOW instead of being an elite player in the NFL later. And some of them will still make it to the NFL anyway obviously. But we can see how the sport is being dumbed down and such due to the lack of development on players.

Some people blame coaches, and maybe it's a little of both. But the big difference from now until 5 years ago is the players.

But I gotta ask - what the frick is going on at Auburn if this is the way you think things are happening?

My point was not so much focused on Alabama, but more that other teams can pull in 4 star bench sitters from other teams. Alabama has had in the past an exceptionally deep bench of highly ranked players. Now teams like Ole Miss, Colorado, and Ohio State have shown they are eager to add those types of players and reward them with NIL money and playing time. While Alabama can also add players I believe the sum of all this will be a leveling of talent across the top 40-50 college football teams that want to be in the CFP.

You can keep your condescension to yourself as you presumed to tell me what Auburn fans focus on. What is going on at Auburn is we have a coach who has had a primary focus on adding higher quality players the past two years. Short term results are not good.

The point you raise about player development is a good one. In this new NIL money and portal movement world it will be interesting to see if players are able to recognize the value of good coaching and development.
