The Beamer era helmets at Virginia Tech were iconic because they were so garish. They were so ugly until they were beautiful. With Fuentes, they would come out in something different every week and they were all bland as hell. He's gone from there now.

Not just the SEC
That's the entire uniform and yes the entire uniform looks really good.
But we are discussing the helmets only, since there's the distinction on why. The helmets are the worst part of the overall uniform. That should tell you something on how great the pants and jerseys combo look. The tiger on the helmet is pretty meh. There are several that are much better than the LSux helmet.

This is a great point. The newer helmets have less actual room for logos. All the air vents, creases, the overall streamlined shape detract from the ability to size and fit the logo for maximum aesthetics.

That Stormtrooper uni we rocked with the "Pro Combat" helmet in the 09' SECC is the cleanest one I've ever seen. Obviously I'm biased, but oh baby:

Generally speaking I like three color helmets (with the lettering being two color) over two. Two color look rather blah.
With all the talk of Mizzou in this thread, the Mizzou helmet I absolutely despised was this hideous ink blot.
The Block M is the best, followed by the oval tiger. At least Drink seems to have phased the blot out.

Nope. We wore the "Pro Combat" uniforms with that helmet, but it was a home game in The Swamp.

Yeah those look really nice.
I really liked how Auburn went even more stormtrooper and put on white facemasks for the Penn St game this year. A lot of AU people weren't fans of it, but I really liked it.
I think going forward AU's standard uniform combos should be white facemasks should go with our away/all-white unis and the orange facemasks for our home/blue tops and white pants. Full disclosure, I'm usually a get off my lawn old guy when it comes to changing traditional uniforms and thought I was gonna hate the orange facemasks, but they look awesome. You can have too much orange, (see UTk and UF when they do orange jerseys with orange pants) but the orange facemask is just a nice accent, imo.

The Riddell Revo Speed/Speedflex helmets make a difference as well vs the hideous Schutt or Xenith helmets.
